Eeeeeeeeee.
Comment Commentary
Shin- But then people might confuse it for a pet store! :O
--
So, yesterday was this whole freshman orientation.. Thing. Basically, they crammed us into the gym, made us touch each other, make noises for them, and move whenever they so desired lest we be paraded around in front of the entire crowd. Then they locked us into rooms with older kids who made us do things to each other, as well to them. They then made us dress up in whatever they wanted us to so they could parade us around in public like their trophies.
..Well, it wasn't quite like that. Basically, they tried to give us a "fun" experience to familiarize us with the school. Since I had summer school, I already knew what they were telling me. So I spent more time trying to figure out how to complain about things.
The guy that spoke to us seemed very un-faculty-ish. It was as if they hired a stand-up comedian and motivational speaker to tell us to work hard. He made us do stupid little.. Actions, I guess. For example, he made us massage the people next to us and called a few people up to have a hugging contest (the winning team popped five balloons between their abdomens first).
After that we were herded into our assigned groups of five so we could meet our junior-or-senior helper person, and this reminded me of Naruto. These herds were then herded into other herds so that there were about fifteen to twenty of us sitting in an empty classroom "getting to know each other" through cheap-ass games. There was one other guy in the room who, much like me, was like "hell no" when they tried to get us to do the particularly stupid things.
Then they tried to dress us up before we went out to tour the campus. It was some really stupid Party City stuff, so I didn't bother, and there were tons of other stupid costumed people running around. I think there was a contest to see who could do the funniest thing.. Or something. No matter what, it wasn't a tour so much as a big jackass festival. They didn't tell us where anything was.
And after that we went back into the gym where they could talk to us some more, and after that we walked to my friend's house, where we played Street Fighter and Katamari, and watched Clerks for the second time.
It was pretty stupid, and I regret waking up at seven in the morning for it.
--
Today they had a barbecue-slash-dance thing going on. My mom insisted that I go, so that I could be social, so I got a ride from Ethan.
We got there early, and his girlfriend was cooking hot dogs, so he felt obliged to help. In fear of looking useless, I started wrapping the hot dogs in tin foil.
Two hours later, I had wrapped 250 hot dogs, most of them with unsatisfactory amounts of foil (parts of the things were visible in some cases), and I was blamed for when they were crappy.
And my reward? Two lukewarm hot dogs and a can of coke without standing in the huge-ass line. Also, I got to skip the pep rally we were suppossed to be at, which was probably Jackassfest II.
After that I was tricked into cleaning up a bunch of balloons I popped. At this point I called home to see if Jump Super Stars had come in the mail, and it did, so I got home as fast as I could.
At the expense of two more hours of socialness with friends.. But whatever. I've been waiting for this game too long.
Too early for impressions, other than "God, I don't know as much Japanese as I thought I did." And I didn't think I knew much to begin with.
Comment whoring question #2: What was your first day of school like? Be it kindergarten, junior high, high school, college, whatever.. Which was the most memorable?

It's retrofication.
Comment Commentary
Alex- I'm not sure how oldschool Street Fighter III could be, considering it was a Dreamcast/PS2 title. :P
Tony- Hell, I've never played Street Fighter before this. The closest thing was, like, Marvel vs. Capcom in a car wash one time.
I improved a bit by the time I returned it. But the only fighting game I've ever really enjoyed playing to the point of near-mastery was Soul Calibur II. No other fighter has interested me that much.
Ken- Or in the case of games, no voice at all?
Tony- Aaaah.
--
We went to the airport today.
They took down the VAGINAS R US sign at the nudie bar.
I can't help it but I must say I'm rather sad.
(If you don't get it, go about a week back in my archives.)

A little bit of.. Well, you know.
Comment Commentary
Mimmi- You're missing out with this one.
Azure- And the "Senny Sucks" campaign came from this theory?
Shin- You'll play Yoshi's Touch & Go but you won't eat sushi.. I don't get it!11
Andy- My "vegetarian" friend still eats sushi. She says she mostly does it to save the animals.. That kind of vegetarian/environmentalism bothers me a lot.
Tony- Yeah, I wasn't planning on beating it. Just sampling it, seeing if it was worth a purchase.. And seeing that Best Buy's listing it for $20, I may as well.
--
My Windows Media Player's video playing is really.. Whack, right now. It shows everything at a very, very high contrast, or saturation, or something. Whatever it is, it isn't right, and reinstalling didn't help. So for now I'm sort of stuck only watching Quicktime files.
Which wouldn't be much of a problem (I prefer Quicktime anyway), if more sites streamed .avis. *shrugs* I'll just have to look around a bit.
--
The purpose of my life has withered bit by bit as the summer goes on, and at this point my only reason for existing is this: To keep my pillow company until noon, when I wake up, keep the animals and plants alive, and get the mail. If Jump Super Stars isn't in the mail, I go into a crippling depression, fall asleep, and repeat the cycle.
Well, there's a little more to it than that. My mom and brother are coming back tomorrow, so things will be more noisy, but I'll be able to go places again, which should be nice.
--
I've been keeping myself occupied with Street Fighter III and Tales of Symphonia. To be honest, I'm really surprised at how bad I am at Street Fighter. Part of it might be the fact that I had no idea how to do special moves since it didn't come with the instruction manual (and there isn't one built into the game).. I guess I was expecting my mad Soul Calibur skillz to transfer over, but evidently that's not how it works. I've gotten better.. Well, with Ryu at least. I still can't get past the third stage no matter what. God damn Chun Li.
Or whoever else it might be.
--
Tales of Symphonia has turned out to be entertaining. The voices are driving me insane, and the plot is hardly breathtaking, but the battle system is one of the most entertaining I've played in a while. It's real-time.. Sort of like Kingdom Hearts if it didn't suck. I've only been able to play it for three hours now, since I was held away from it for two of the five rental days, and I got absorbed in Street Fighter for a bit, but since it's $20 now, I plan on buying it. It reminds me of simpler times, back when I sat in the living room straining my eyes to figure out what the hell was going on in Golden Sun.
--
There's some sort of orientation thing going on tomorrow at the high school, which means I have to get up at a reasonable hour.
Damn it.
EDIT: Oh, right Naruto dub.
I just discovered that IMDB has some of the of the voice actors for the Naruto dub up. I'm satisfied with the choices for Kakashi and Naruto, though I'm a little worried about Sakura. Who'd have ever thought that Naruto would end up with Pokemon talent?
Still, FLCL voice director man may save the day. We'll see.

Comment Commentary
Solo- That's why you need to get it at an actual restaurant. ;)
Though for a first-timer, when you do that, just stick with shrimp and salmon.. The stuff you know. No funky names. Trust me on that. <_<
--
Speaking of sushi, I just went to this one Japanese cuisiney restaurant down by Universal Studios yesterday (We actually went inside Universal as well, but there's not much to say about that). It's a place called Wasabi, appropriately enough, and being in the midst of the other swanky restaurants in that area, I expected it to be a very formal, very expensive place.
But it was surprisingly inexpensive and easy-going. There was no wait to sit, and we just sat in the corner booth as they blasted easy listening on the speakers.
The main courses were anywhere between ten and twenty dollars, with the sushi at about eight dollars for four pieces. Much less than I expected. The last time we were at a "real" Japanese restaurant, the place was cripplingly expensive, so I was rather wary.
The sushi was the best goddamn sushi I have had. Ever. Feeling adventurous, I ditched the regular stuff and went for the "house specials." Somewhat to my dismay, they had hollywoodized names, but that wasn't a big deal when I tasted them. The Marilyn Mon-Rolls were supreme.
So, in order to whore comments from you people (except Solo. He's out of luck), have you ever tried sushi, and if so, what did you think of it?
--
I rented Tales of Symphonia, Street Fighter Anniversary Edition and Clerks the other day, and bought a bag of Pixi Stix to go along with them. Once I was home, staring at my pile of Blockbuster goodies, I realized it was the perfect all-nighter recipe, but I decided against it, since nobody else was here to take part in the festivities, and it's kind of sad when you do that by yourself.
And the next night I was so tired I slept from eight PM to noon the next day. To be honest, I found that kind of scary.

Let's make fun of Vista some more.
Comment Commentary
James- You should make that your wallpaper.
Sara- Oh, the blinding kind of house.. Yeah.
Shin- Now that one's just crazy. You're CRAZY.
--
While we were out yesterday, I had the F.E.A.R. single player demo downloading over BitTorrent. It got done around 1 AM, and I was eager to play it, but it freaked me out about two minutes in and I turned it off.
My first impression of the game (aside from the first shock-creepy thing that happened) was "God damn, is my computer that outdated already?" The game runs like shit on this.. The automatic settings for the visuals was disturbingly low- everything at the lowest setting. Thinking that this was meant to be changed manually, I cranked it up to "moderate" settings, with 1024 x 768 resolution instead of 640 x 480, and tried it out.
It looked awful. Even with these moderate settings the aliasing was atrocious and it ran at a god awful framerate. So I put it back down to the minimum, and it was still very bad, but almost tolerable.
The combat is rather fun. The enemy AI is rather impressive, and they talk a lot, and actually have the ability to move around obstacles (they'll jump through broken windows and crawl under debris, which really does leave them open and shootable, not that I'm complaining).. And the slow motion is useful, especially when your computer can hardly run the game at a 20-fps framerate (everything smooths out when it slows). Damage levels are fairly accurate, too- headshots are headshots, and that makes me happy.
Like I said before, the game is meant to scare you. It aims for the suspense route instead of "GAAAH OMFG A GIANT BLOODY DEMON JUST JUMPED OUT FROM BEHIND A CORNER", though it breaks things up with typical FPS shootouts.
It's a bit of a bad thing, I think. There were moments (in the whole fifteen minutes that I was playing) where it seemed like I was playing two different games: A generic sci-fi shooter and a game more along the lines of survival horror (still in first person, of course). Sort of disjointed.
Though the presentation was very similar to Half-Life 2. Your character doesn't speak, everything is very scripted.. There's other things, but I'm afraid I would spoilerize it for people.
So yeah, it was fun, but I'll probably wait until it comes down in price a bit (and I get a much better video card).

We went to one of those theatrical cooking-in-front-of-you-while-lighting-shit-on-fire Japanese restaurants today. Our chef, oddly enough, was Hispanic, and he called himself the "Mexican Ninja." He was good with knives, but thankfully he wasn't too much of a showman. We were hoping to see a movie after.
The food was pretty good, too, though our sushi was messed up. It was wrapped very loosely, so you couldn't pick it up with chopsticks. The stuff was oozing out of the side, as well.
The movie we decided to go to was a sneak preview of "The Great Raid," a World War II movie telling the story of the rescue of five hundred American prisoners of war from a Japanese camp in the Phillippines.
Slow buildup, uninteresting characters, a very interesting (though overly indulgent in explosions) action sequence.. It was not good.
Though I could have sworn that uber-dork kid from summer school was sitting in front of me. It looked just like him from behind, and this was the kind of movie I'd imagine he would go to, so I paid more attention to that than the actual movie.
I need better posting material than this.

Another 1337 joke.
Comment Commentary
Azure- The name "Vista" just reminds me too much of housing tracks out here in Southern California. It's always Hispanic names like that, and when I think of the name "Windows Vista," I imagine the default wallpaper is the Windows logo with the different panel colors replaced with red, white and green with a little sombrero on top.
I'm cruel like that.
Tony- Which part? The file restrictions, the ID3 tag goof-ups, the RAM-devouring, the fact that "the" counts when they alphabetize playlists..?
--
I learned a very valuable lesson last night:
Do not listen to Dark Side of the Moon when you're trying to fall asleep. I did that last night, as part of my sleeping ritual.. I recalled being interested in the first track, and since it wasn't blaring screaming feedback-infested aggro-punk, I decided to listen to it on my iPod while in bed.
So.. First two tracks get me paranoid, right? The little ambient noises coming from every angle, and the insane mumbling and laughter.. In the pitch black of an empty house.
So by the end of track two I'm getting more heavy-eyed, about ready to drift off into my own slumber land, and in come the blaring bells and clocks that begin track three.
It woke me up completely, and as luck would have it, my friend decided to text message me at four in the morning. I've found that she does this a lot, most of the time just to bother me and wake me up at such ungodly times of the night. Well, I sure as hell showed her when I texted back, complaining about the paranoia that had been brought about by the musicks, and that continued for about fifteen minutes until she apparently passed out mid-message.
Which led me back to sitting there in the silence, not only listening attentively to random noises outside, but also hoping my friend would respond, since I was not aware she fell asleep, and I was completely awake now (not only because of "Time" but the blaring lights and noises of my phone).
Final sleep time: 5:00 AM.
Gah. I was hoping this post would be more to the point.
EDIT: My copy of Jump Superstars shipped this morning. Apparently, the people who did the extremely fast and expensive shipping from Lik Sang got the game before even the Japanese did, and one of them put some gameplay footage up here. It doesn't show both screens, but since this is an early tutorial level (it seems), they probably don't have much to do with the Koma yet.
I am giddy.

Of media players and personal responsibility
Comment Commentary
satan665- A lot of my rediscovered obsession with Japanese stuff has come from this dream I had the other night depicting my subconscious's idea of what Shibuya must be like.. But it was more like an area from Nocturne mixed with that scene from Ghost in the Shell 2 with the street festival and drowned in pink.. God, it was weird.
Sara- Fully gone: N, M, and "
Almost gone: E, S, D, C, V, <, >, ?, K, I. I'm afraid I can't spell anything out of those.
Shin- I've sped up the process on mine by eating greasy foods such as popcorn at the computer.
--
I've been trying to escape the hellish control Apple has placed over my computer with iTunes. Normally it wouldn't be much of a problem, but when I started buying music on iTunes they dragged me into their crazy little AAC-encoded scheme.
Plus, once I put Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (How posery of me, I don't have anything else of theirs- And I only have this because I found it in my dad's CD case) and these Pixies Live albums onto my computer, I knew I had to move to a different media player. The little split-second gaps between songs is completely intolerable with those kinds of songs.
So after consulting the Media Players thread in the OtakuBoards PC/Mac forum, I decided to download Foobar 2000 ( recommendation by Tony).
The difference in sound quality was definitely noticeable, at least on a couple of albums. The thing definitely isn't that aesthetically pleasing by default.. But that doesn't really matter.
And then I noticed problems. First off, it takes "the" into consideration when alphabetizing music.. As in, Pixies comes before The Amps because P comes before T. It just agitates me, I guess, since that was one of the things I liked about iTunes.
Another problem with organization: It messed up a lot of my song tags, which worked fine in other applications.
Some songs will end up just fine, such as my Pillows collection, which ends up like this:
0721. The Pillows- Smile [08] - Fun Fun Fun Ok!
And then other songs, such as a few of my Ted Leo, just end up with the file name. I could go in and synchronize everything if I just took the time to do it, but I don't feel like making the effort.
Then the thing doesn't play AAC-encoded files, which basically means half of my Pixies albums along with assorted songs from other bands do not work. I could have sworn the website said it supports AAC, but I guess not.
So at least for the moment, I'm back in Apple country, until I can get everything sorted out.
--
Since my mom and brother are in Pittsburgh and my dad's at work all the time, I've been left here with very little do and nowhere else to go. So, out of boredom, I've been doing housekeeping things. I promised that I would water the plants and feed the animals, but on top of that I've been cleaning up messes that I did not create, doing dishes, getting the mail, and laundry (though I think I'll make my dad do that one. I hate laundry). It makes me feel rather independent, though I would feel a lot better about that if I could actually drive to places and do independent things there.
--
I've been reading about the Windows Vista beta, and I'm pretty much unimpressed. A sleeker look that you could just download off of some website, virtual folders that are fundamentally the same thing as iTunes playlists, slightly improved file browsing.. None of it really gets me excited, except for maybe DirectX 10. The security improvements could be beneficial, though at the same time I imagine it could be rather frustrating. Maybe once I test it out I'll be more interested, but at the moment I'm pretty much meh.
Of course, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. They're probably going to throw in more interesting features later on.. After all, this is a beta, and they still have a good while to improve.
I'll probably be upgrading my computer a bit by then.. New video card (I'm two "generations" behind in the video card department now- GeForce 5700) and wireless internetty stuff, probably. If they give a good reason for changing to Vista, maybe I'll throw that in there as well when the time comes.

Sooo, deh-soo nay? i have masterred teh japaneez!~
Comment Commentary
Tony- Or they'll have cancelled the deal entirely.. But seriously, people are saying they already modified the deal so that you don't need a coupon, but you need to turn in four games instead.
Shin- That's another thing. There were homeless crackheads sleeping under the Vaginas R Us sign. What a coincidence!
Sara- There's four of them now.. Though gamerankings.com says Myst III wasn't well-received, Myst IV seems to be enjoyable.
satan665- Man, if Feel The Magic makes you want a DS, whatever you do don't play Meteos or Kirby's Canvas Curse. They'll hypnotize you into buying one on the spot.
Ethan- And how exactly are you going to do that? Buy cheap-ass GBA games from Blockbuster for $2 and run over to EB? By then, I think your gas bill will compensate for the effects of the deal. :P
James- I got a Giga Pet for Christmas back when I was six. The goddamn tadpole wouldn't take its medication. I did everything I could to keep the little bastard happy, but it wouldn't take the damned pill. Eventually I gave up and shoved it under a couch cushion until I found it months later with a dead battery.
--
I never mentioned that I finally got my Pixies CDs- you know, the live recording from the show I went to.. They came in the mail on Monday, and I've been enjoying them thoroughly.
I took a couple pictures of the packaging. The thing on the left is the certificate of authenticity. Apparently, I was the 271st person of 500 to place an order on the June 2nd shows. The one in the middle is the LA shows.. I like the orange and blue. It reminds me of Samurai Champloo's opening theme. And the thing on the right is some 15-song Cleveland recording they sent me for no reason. If it was different material, I wouldn't mind, but between all 65 of these songs, most of them are repeats, and I don't think I'll be listening to the ones that I wasn't at as much.
Also, you can see my shirt in that picture. At the bottom.
The "inside." That's the actual certificate on the left, the inside of the LA one in the middle (a big picture of the band in the background), and the back of the paper slip casing for the Cleveland one.
Also pictured: My shitty Microsoft mouse, my Myst case, and my keyboard that has most of the letters rubbed off from years of furious typing.
This sounds like I'm bragging, doesn't it? That wasn't the intention.. Just thought it was cool.
--
Turns out that Jump Super Stars is going to be more text-heavy than I initially thought. To unlock new koma (character cameos, basically) you have to go through a mission mode, where you have to meet specific requirements in different matches. Of course, those requirements are going to be in Japanese, so I'm going to have to require on FAQs more.
But due to the feeling of helplessness that comes with being a white boy in an Asian gamer's world, I've broken out the Japanese books again in hopes of learning something.
This time, for reals.
I give it a week.

Breathe.
Comment Commentary
James- Yeah, the mansion's very pretty. No way I can deny that.
Shin- My mom used to play Columns- a Tetris knockoff on Sega Game Gear. She insists to this day that Columns came first. But we all know that's bull.
Sara- How many worlds are there in all? Back when I first played it I thought it was just the first one.. But then again, I never read much in the library back then. :P
Ethan- This was when I was six. Back when I was fairly normal.
Andy- There's.. Some. I recall seeing Doom 3 in the Mac section of Fry's recently.
I think.
Tony- The last guild battle I was in left me feeling disheartened to the extreme.
--
Well, I just went through a Nintendogs phase. It first started when I read on a forum that some guy that worked at an EBGames read that they would be doing a promotion where you could turn three Game Boy Advance games in and get Nintendogs free. This quickly caused a lot of interest on the forum, until August first, when the deal actually began.
Under normal circumstances I wouldn't really care about Nintendogs. It looks like a fun game, though I don't think I would get as much enjoyment out of it as I would something like Advance Wars Dual Strike or Animal Crossing DS. But I had several GBA games I wasn't going to ever play again anyway, so I jumped at the oppurtunity for a free game (one that, if I decide I don't want to open, I can exchange for AWDS).
So I called EB, made sure they knew about it, and they did, so I went to the mall, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Kirby's Nightmare in Dream Land, and Yu-Gi-Oh: The Eternal Duelist Soul in my pocket. Fortunately, the guy I talked to on the phone was still behind the counter when I got there, so I didn't have to explain the deal to another person. It took him a while to register the games and everything, but it went more or less smoothly until he read the fine print, where it said you need a coupon.
It was revealed earlier that day that EB was doing this promotion with some other company who was going to form a promotional street team. They would give you the coupon, and then you could do the deal. That was fine until the company pulled out and the deal was called off. But the stores don't know yet, or something.
I really don't get the whole story. There's different rumors coming from everywhere.. But that seems to be the general concensus.
I'm over it now, but at the time I was a little peeved. In the midst of "omg free!" I actually got kind of excited about the game.. But due to money issues, I'm probably not going to get it for a while.
If you have three GBA games you don't think you'll miss, and you're interested in Nintendogs, I still recommend trying it out at your local EB. There are people who have managed to do the deal without the coupon, maybe just because they were dealing with stupid register workers, but it's worth a shot anyway.
--
My mom and brother are in Pittsburgh now. We woke up rather early to drop them off. It was pretty uneventful, with four whole seconds of saying goodbye, though the strip club / porn shop by the airport had a fun new addition to their general public indecency:
They now have a huge sign right next to the main road into the airport that says, in humongous bold red letters, "VAGINAS R US."
I found it hilariously trashy, but my mom's offended and feels a need to pressure my dad into calling the mayor and complaining.
I think it's the best way to say "Welcome to Los Angeles," though.

My mom's medication looks like vials of crack.
Comment Commentary
Shin- I was either going to rent Eternal Darkness or Tales of Symphonia.. Guess I went with the wrong choice for me, huh?
Azure- I woke up at 10 yesterday. I was very proud.
Tony- I thought Pious Augustus was worse.. Though he wasn't exactly beautiful, either. :P
satan665- If you have someone to spend it with, I'd imagine that's great. All I have is my brother harrassing me to buy him red dye in Guild Wars.
Ethan- That's why I propose we condense our gaming weekend into a day.
--
My brother was rummaging through boxes of old CDs in the garage the other day in hopes of finding some kickass educational PC games (fun ones, though) that he wanted to reminisce over, and along with Zoombinis' Logical Journey he found Myst.
I bought Myst a few years ago, after seeing pictures of it (and ogling the graphics, as was the fashion at the time). As young as I was, I was entertained by the gameplay, but between the fact that I didn't know what the hell I was doing and how the game was constantly crashing on our old computer, I eventually gave up and uninstalled it.
Now that I have a computer that doesn't crash every time you try to run a game that is nothing but pre-rendered images and poor-quality video files, I have reinstalled it and I'm having fun with it.
It wasn't until I started over that I realized how little of the game I understood back when I was nine. I guess I didn't get the level of immersion that was present- if something was in the game, you could use it somehow. And everything's connected.
..Now if only I could understand how it's all connected, and figure out at least one of the goddamn puzzles. I spent half an hour writing down different patterns for this one thing only to find out my hunch was totally off.
--
I'm starting to get back into Guild Wars, too. After getting my ass (well, our Guild's collective ass) whooped in PvP last night, I've felt really bad about neglecting the game, so I'm working on getting higher in the levels and farther into the game world. I got to level 15, which is still far from where almost everyone else is, but I'll get there.
For the Quantum Kabuki Troupe. *salutes*
--
One last gaming-related note: I bought Jump Superstars on YesAsia.com the other day. It's $43 on there instead of the $50 on PlayAsia and Lik-Sang, and though I am getting it later than most places, I'm glad I saved the seven dollars.
According to the paper I printed out afterwards, it seems the game is going to ship August 13.. Which sounds like I got the second shipment. Didn't get it fast enough, yeah?
I'm wondering if the multiplayer can be single-cart, and if it is, will it work on American DSes? I read somewhere that DS Download Play doesn't work on imported games.. But that was on a message board, so the dude was probably full of shit.
Edit: Nevermind, I know now, thanks to knowledgeable message board people.
--
Um.. In non-gaming-related stuff, I'm about two-thirds done with Ender's Game, and I just had dinner at the neighbors' house. They are really good cooks, and it's a shame that they're moving. We barely got to see them enough as it is, since they've been in China for so long.
Being in their house reminded me of my early childhood. One of my first friends lived in that house, years ago. We'd always play outside every night.. I remember one of my earliest gaming experiences there, when he whooped my ass at some Sega skiing game he didn't tell me how to play. He could get away with that stuff since I was a few years younger than him.
I look at the kitchen and remember eating Spaghettios, I look at the front porch and remember riding bikes around in tight circles, I look at the stairs and remember getting my head stuck between the support pillars. It was sort of odd.
Now that I think of it, he might be in college now.. I'll have to ask my parents about that.
