Today was a very productive day, I would say. I went to school and went through the usual routine. Then at about 2:00 p.m. a few newspaper staff members and myself went to the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) campus for an award ceremony they were having for a journalism competition.

I took first in Editorial Cartoon. Right when they called my name I said to myself, "That's right, bitch," lol. My ego has gone through the roof, but I am still as humble and hungry for more. I also took third in Original Art/Graphic, and that was for a hand-drawn illustration I did. I thought it was enough to take at least second. The first place winner was another guy of our staff who actually quit at the semester. His graphics were good and well done, I can see why they liked them, but I can easily tell how they were done. I mean, I could have done them easily once I had the photos to work with. They liked his because they were creative, I suppose. I do not know what the second place item was.

I also took first along with pretty much everyone else on staff for Best In-Depth by a Team for our newspapers first issue where we had a whole 12-page section of the paper dedicated to the renovations happening to our school. Aynone who had a story in it won that award.

Our newspaper also took first as Best Overall Newspaper as well as first in Sweepstakes. Sweepstakes is where they had a certain amount of points assigned to each 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for all of the previous awards, and whoever's total was the highest won. Our newspaper had 12 first place wins, lol.

I ran into an old acquaintance from freshman year when I went to a different high school. I was surprised. I also used to have a crush on his older sister, but that is another story and I do not think he knows that, lol. His paper seemed to do pretty well, though it was a division below ours. Our paper competes in Division A, his in Division B. Division A is where all the big "balls-y" papers are (and really, our newspaper is the only one with "big balls" so to speak), and Division B is for the smaller, more newsletter-like newspapers.

Anyway, when we returned to school I finished filling out my application to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. I just need to get my transcripts together. My main area of study being in the college of Journalism & Mass Communications, and as of now my major would be News-Editorial. That pretty much encompasses anything in print: writing, reporting and designing for anything including newspapers, magazines and even online stuff. I do believe that is what I want. Previously I had thought the journalism area was a lot like it is at my high school, where the news class would be working on the newspaper, but I later found that they are just a bunch of separate classes where a bunch of collective projects are assigned. I talked to a guy I kind of know there and he said there are not a lot of graphic classes, but within the projects opportunities to arise to do such things. I think that is all right. I can always do that kind of stuff on my own time, and become more acquainted with good writing, editing and designing.

I also got the ball rolling on some competition/scholarship stuff I have found available. One I found is just simply submitting an editorial cartoon and I get a chance to win $500. It said two per publication, so I did submit two. Also there was another of the same competition, but for graphics and illustrations instead. It said one per publication, but I figured I would do one for each of the newspaper, our feature magazine and our visual/literary arts magazine since those are three separate publications. I figure I should at least win something, but if not ... oh well. The worst that could happen is they simply say "no." It would be kind of cool if multiple won, lol. The best that could happen is that they all win something (if that is even possible). I shall not even know about the results until November, though. The deadline for these is June 7, so ... yeah.

I still cannot believe I am going to be a Husker ... >_>; And ANOTHER thing that crossed my mind the other day. Living in a dorm. Having a roommate. Chances are it will be some big football jock who smokes drinks and all that crap, and chances are I shall strangle him in his sleep one night. o_O I do not deal well with people, let alone living with one. Maybe I might opt for a single-person dorm if I have the money for it.
