PLATINUM - NUMBER 78

Platinum

"The Only Metal Fit for a King"

*At room temperature

Electron Configuration Diagram
Bohr's Model of Platinum

Nucleus (Gray Ball) - Consists of 78 protons. Platinum has various isotopes ranging from 112 neutrons to 120 neutrons. Isotopes are normally represented as name of element-number of neutrons, for example, platinum-117 and platinum-114. Varying neutrons to not effect the charge of the electron as a whole.

Electrons (Blue Spheres) - The electrons in an atom equal that of the atom's protons, which in this casde is 78. The electrons in Platinum reach the sixth energy level encircling the nucleus.

Properties, Utilization, & History

Lewis Dot

The origin of the name Platinum cam from the Spanish word 'platina', which means 'little silver.' Platinum is usually seen as a greyish-silver ore, and is usually solid. Its density in scientific notation is 21.45 g/cm times 10 to the power of -3. Its is rarely seen in liquid form due to its outrageous melting point of 2041.4 K (1768.3 °C or 3214.9 °F) and boiling point of 4098 K (3825 °C or 6917 °F). Since platinum is extremely uncommon, its price is nearly double the price of gold. Its rarity caused King Louis XV of France to deem it the only element fit for a king in the 18th century. Its original, or alchemical, symbol is actually forged by combining the silver symbol, a crescent moon, with the gold symbol, a sun with a dot in its center. Platinum is so rare that if you combined all the worlds mined platinum, you would have a cube of 25 square feet of platinum. It is often seen as jewelry but is extremely hard to damage. Platinum may have a high resistance, but is still can be corroded by sulfur, cyanides, halogens, and caustic alkalis. Platinum is also a catalyst in fuel, so people are attempting to reduce its cost for fuel cell research. The discovery of platinum dates as far back as to the days of the humanist Julius Caesar Scaliger of Italy, who wrote of a mysterious Mexican metal during the mid-1500's. It was officially discovered in 1735 and later serialized as an element in 1741 by Charles Wood. Platinum is found by mining its ore and extracting the platinum from the stone. It is usually found in Colombia, the Witwatersrand of South Africa, the Ural Mountains, Ontario, and in some American states (specifically the western ones). Sice platinum has only one valence electron, it has a single Lewis Dot.
