Just a boy Part Four
The beatings were more frequent now, and school became sporadic. It was hard to attend when his ribs were cracked from "falling down stairs" or his wrist broken from "skateboarding".
Life became nothing for James. Everything hurt. His body, his mind, his heart. Every night he would dream of Heather, and every morning he'd wake up screaming for her to come back. His heart hurt so bad... Physical pain was nothing. He was breaking.
After the last incident including a broken arm from "skiing", one kid at school boldly asked, "How'd you get hurt this time?"
James' head spun. Pain, pain, pain. The quiet part of him shattered. "My aunt beat me again!" he screamed.
The classroom went silent. The teacher pulled him out. The counsellor talked to him in that irksome, quiet, slow voice. James didn't care if they believed him. Nothing hurt anymore. He told them so. That caused a stir.
"Are you making this up?" the counsellor asked him.
James stared into his eyes. "What do I have to gain?"
Silence.
"I don't care if you believe me."
"You've said that."
"It's true. If you don't, and you tell her, she'll probably kill me."
More silence.
"I won't mind that. It'll stop the hurting."
"James-"
"If I die, I'll forgive you. Not her though."
The counsellor sank his head into his hands.
"Do you not believe me?"
"I believe you James. I'm going to get you out of this."
James looked at him, those dusty blue eyes blank and emotionless. "Good luck with that, then."
