Just a boy Part Five
James sat laughing in the car with Boaz, his guardian. Boaz had taken him in after his aunt was sent to prison, seeing as he was his father's best friend. After a long four years, James was being sent to a public school. As they pulled up, Boaz patted his arm and grinned. "You'll do fine. Just remember to have fun and not get kicked out for insanity."

James laughed, and got out of the car. Running up the steps of the school, he tore down the halls, pausing only to ask for directions. He burst into the room, shouting, "Howdy ya'll! My name is James, and I'm your brand spanking new classmate!"

The silence that greeted him was broken by two things, a rowdy boy with a green mowhawk that laughed, and a sweet voice that yelled, "James!"

Turning, James burst into laughter as he saw Heather. Shocking her and everyone else by tackling her, he hugged his old friend. The rest of the day he spent sneaking a phone call to Boaz to see if she could come by after school, and cleverly keeping her from realizing he had a new guardian.

On the ride home, she told him softly, "I'm sorry I moved, James. I told my parents, but they got upset and transferred me. I had no choice."

James patted her arm, and smiled a sad smile. "It's all right, everything worked out."

"But it didn't! You're still stuck with her!" she exclaimed.

As James left the bus for the house, he grinned mischieviously and said, "Am I?"

Then he kicked open his front door and bellowed, "Boaz! I'm home! And I brought home a girl!"

Boaz's lean figure appeared in the hall, smiling his serene smile. "You make it sound like you're forcing her to marry you," he said mildly, and shook her hand.

"That's a good idea," James mused, and Boaz rolled his eyes.

The rest of the evening was spent with James cracking jokes and Boaz retorting with sarcasm. To James' delight, Heather laughed at all his jokes. Just before she left, she kissed him briefly on the lips and said, "Bye James."

Unsure and thrown off, James waved enthusiastically and shouted, "Byeeeeeeee Heather!!!!!"

After she had left, Boaz took one look at James' face and said, "Smooth."

"Shut up!"
