Clair de Lune-- Chapter 4 (with a side note at the bottom)
The festival went on well into the afternoon, and even into the night. Elise and Joey had a most wonderful time, dancing among the faeries, drinking of the flowers' nectar, and playing their games. Elise had never seen Joey seem so relaxed as if he belonged there, except for when they were alone. Elise, herself, felt as if she belonged there, amid the parties and magic and laughter. It was why she came to Rowan Oak so often.
"Joey..." she gasped as they spun in a circle with Maelie and another faerie by the name of Dristan. “I wonder if we might be able to stop for a bit? Maelie? What do you say...?”
They were all out of breath, so the faeries stopped spinning the couple and Maelie took them off to the side.
“So! How are you two fairing around here? Fun, no?” She smiled, teeth white as the first of snowfall.
“Yes...” Joey panted. “It is... really quite a party. I never knew I could have such fun, except when I first met Elise,” he said, glancing to her. “And I truly felt alive.”
Elise smiled, her eyes shining with the nearness of tears of joy. “This has been such fun, Maelie, but... could we not go back in a while? I had hoped to spend some time with Joey in Rowan Oak, just the two of us?”
Maelie nodded, and bowed. “Of course, Princess!” She winked. “You shall be able to leave in half an hour?”
Elise nodded. “Oh, Maelie, you and your pet names! My sweet friend...”
Joey looked like he was going to laugh at the two. They both resembled children with their attitudes, kind natures, and voices, but their looks spoke of them as beautiful, strong women... exempting the fact that Maelie was a faerie.
“Alright then! Princess, Prince.” She nodded to both Joey and Elise. “You shall both go back and be normal in half an hour. No more, no less. Enjoy the time you have left, and if ever you are in need of a relief from the human life again, come back, and we shall play some more!” Although her voice was with energy, Maelie spoke softly, not wishing to let anyone hear that Elise and Joey were human.
“Thank you so much, Maelie! I am sure we shall have fun while we remain. Where shall we meet you, if we are to become separated?”
Maelie pointed to the edge of the brook. “There. If you cannot find me, meet me there when you feel light go through you. That is when the change shall start. I hope you do not wander off too far, if at all.”
Elise smiled as Maelie playfully rubbed against Joey. “Maelie! You and your playful ways... so like myself, if I had wings....” She laughed her sweet, musical laugh. “So, what shall we do next? Drink more nectar, dance more? Maybe even play among the flowers as the faerie children do?”
Joey looked down at Maelie, a bit nervous, then loosened up and smiled as she went to hug Elise. “Sure, why not? We are, after all, children ourselves here, no?”
Maelie nodded and smiled. “Indeed, you are. You are as old as many of our children. I believe I shall join you. Will we play hide and seek?”
Elise nodded frivolously, and clapped her hands once. “Oh! Yes, that was always a favorite of mine! Are you alright with that game, Joey?”
“Of course, angel. I would love to play that with you and Maelie.” He leaned down, gripping her chin and kissed her lightly.
Maelie laughed, dragging them from their moment over to the flowers and toadstools. “Come along you two, there’ll be plenty of time for that when you are back to your normal selves.”
Elise was caught off balance, almost falling off the petal they were currently standing on, and into the brook. Joey caught her and pulled her to him. He smoothed back the hair from her face and held her close as she steadied her racing heart. Maelie looked frightened.
“There there, Elise... I’ve got you.” Joey breathed into her ear, petting her hair gently as she leaned against his shoulder, trying to catch her breath.
“Princess! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to catch you off guard! Are you alright?”
“Yes... thank you Joey.... And you for caring Maelie. It was... quite the adrenaline rush, I must say.”
Joey smiled. “You and your games, Elise.” He ruffled her hair, and she shot him a mean look. “Wow, I know not to do that again, don’t I?”
Elise grinned. “Yes, you do. Now, where were we about that game?”
The half hour passed quickly, and Elise and Joey felt light swim through them, almost like a sick, quivering feeling, but a warm one. Maelie was instantly by their side, leading them to the edge of the willow.
“Now, it is time to say goodbye. I hope you both shall come back once more and visit later on?”
“I intend to, Maelie, and maybe Joey will feel like joining me. I shall see you later then...” Elise hugged her friend, even kissed her cheek, and Maelie returned the favor.
“I shall be sure to come and join her when she does return, Maelie. I hope you fair
well.” He hugged the faerie and kissed her cheek, as Elise had done, Maelie again returning the favor.
“Well then.... As the night comes closer and the time draws near, I wish you both safety as you go away from here.... Return!”
Maelie lifted her arms, suddenly, to the sky, her gaze following as well. Elise and Joey were both back to their normal height, standing in the clearing. The sky was growing a beautiful rosy pink. Elise sighed, and leaned against Joey. His arms came around her instantly.
“You are tired, aren’t you?”
“A little, but I promised to spend the day with you, and now... you must decide what you want to do. We made an agreement.”
“Elise... you are too sweet. To be honest... I am a bit tired myself, mostly from all that dancing, aren’t you?” Joey leaned to kiss the hollow of Elise’s neck, and she smiled.
“Yes... but you must still decide what we do, alright?”
“Okay then. I have the perfect idea.”
Joey went to gather their cloaks, and laid his on the ground, pulling Elise to come and sit with him on the warm material. He laid hers over them both, and it was surprisingly big enough.
“We shall sleep here, in the warmth of this magical place, agreed?”
“Joey...” Elise reached up to touch his face. “You are too sweet, too romantic for your own good....”
“But, for some reason, Elise... You choose to love me anyway.” Joey kissed Elise, curling up beside her, and resting his head on his arm.
“Sweet dreams, my love...” Elise whispered, placing her arm around his waist and moving closer to him as well.
“Sweet dreams, my angel.” Joey kissed the top of her head, and they both fell asleep in the warmth of Rowan Oak. Maelie coming to place her own cloak around the two after they’d drifted off to sleep.
“Aw, poor mortals. You tired yourselves out in all the fun. Well, no matter. I shall make sure nothing happens to you, and that you both stay warm and comfortable in your dreams of one another.” Maelie smiled, casting her spells.
When she was finished, the faerie slipped away, back to her little post at the willow. She watched the sweet couple into the night, until the stars came out, and she, herself, disappeared out of sight.
~~~~I hope you all enjoy this chapter. I'm supposed to be asleep, and must go to school in a few hours. I'm sorry if I seem as though I'm not happy for a few days... and to be honest, I won't be. I hate this hellish twist life has brought upon me. I do hope you all are well. I shall speak more later. Enjoy, it took away some of my sleep time to get this chapter to you all. ^_^ Ja.~~~~
