I had to work at the Band's car wash today. I totally forgot about it. Though it took some time, I got them to wash my bike. I was reading pipsqueak's post about how people make fun of her for being short. Well being freakishly tall isn't so great (I'm really not that tall). I was the only one who could reach the top of the cars during my two shifts at the car wash. I would like to say sorry to LB because she hates spiders. Anyways, it's not me who chooses the pictures of the day.
DID YOU KNOW...
...that although related to modern filter feeding baleen whales, the recently discovered prehistoric whale Janjucetus had large serrated teeth implying that it fed on large fish or even sharks?
TODAY IN HISTORY
1848 - California Gold Rush: The New York Herald reported news to the East Coast of the United States that a gold rush was on in California.
1942 - World War II: Allied forces raided Dieppe, France in the Dieppe Raid.
1953 - Operation Ajax: The government of Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran was overthrown.
1960 - Russian space dogs Belka and Strelka began to orbit the Earth aboard the Korabl-Sputnik-2 spacecraft.
1991 - Mikhail Gorbachev was announced as "ill and had been relieved of his state post as President" in a failed Soviet coup attempt.
PICTURE OF THE DAY
The white-lipped snail (Cepaea hortensis) is a very close relative of the grove snail. It is very slightly smaller than the grove snail, but shares the same variation in shell colour and banding. The principal distinguishing feature is a white band at the lip of the shell, although this is not reliable for accurate identification. The two species can mate and reproduce, and share the same habitats, although the range of the white-lipped snail extends closer to the Arctic in Northern Europe.
