I Return! (Because Saying "I'm Back!" Is So Overused ^_^)

Sorry for the sudden leave without warning (wow, I'm apologising for that kind of thing a lot lately, aren't I?). I've been on vacation with the family for the past week. We went to Sanibel Island in Florida, which is located on the Gulf side and is basically two towns inside a wildlife preserve. There are no private beaches, you aren't allowed to have lights above a certain brightness on at night (it interferes with the turtles) and there is a distinct lack of evil corporations (read: chain stores). It was nice, but I burned my back and shoulders so badly the first day we were there that I had trouble moving in general for the rest of week. I don't even want to remember how painful it was to wear a bra *shudder* I swear, if getting a tattoo is any less brutal than that experience, then I'm all for it.

So, needless to say, when I stepped into the airport terminal yesterday (Saturday), I gratefully inhaled the natural aromas of dirt and frying oil, the later of which made me laugh because I realized that there must be a McDonalds within 20 feet. I could only be in Chicago (and, subsequently, very close to home). Don't get me wrong, I love nature. And I hate McDonalds. But I guess you could say that I have woodland sensibilities as opposed to tropical ones. I live surrounded by a forest preserve, the legal boundaries of which are not often of the greatest concern to the native woodland creatures. I love the ocean and sand, but I missed my towering oak, maple, and walnut trees. The island didn't have enough cover and shade. It's not as soothing reading under palm trees. It just doesn't work right. And the island is too quiet. Trading crickets for sand fleas is a rather bad deal for a few reasons. So thanks, but no thanks Florida. I'll keep my china skin and large, shady trees over your tans and open skies. Plus, I much prefer deer to aligators, but that might just be me.
