The antithesis of proper Japanese manners

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Today, I would like to introduce you to Sagara Sanosuke, the rudest man in Meiji Japan.

Sano: "Fuck you. I ain't rude!"
*whacks sano on the head* "There are children present."

Throughout the manga, we see Sano doing things that are just considered plain rude in polite Japanese society.

1. In volume 3, we see Sano patting Oguni-sensei on the back after he treats Yahiko for the jimson weed poison.

As a general rule, the Japanese aren't all touch-feely and slapping someone on the back is considered a sign of disrespect rather than of affection as it is here.

2. In volume 6, we see Sano and Katsu drinking sake together when they meet up for the first time in ten years. Sano is pouring his own sake, which is rude when drinking in company.

When drinking in company, your pour sake for others and they pour for you.

3. Throughout the manga, we see Sano continuously flipping people the bird. I'm pretty certain it means the same in Japanese as it does in Western.

4. In volume 26, we see Sano and Yahiko shoveling food into their mouths like there's no tomorrow and then belching loudly after.

When eating a proper Japanese meal, you eat slowly and respectfully, experiencing the meal, not just eating it. Belching is considered rude there as it is here.

Sano: "You done pickin' on me yet?"

Me: "Not quite yet."

*grabs sano and plucks his feathers off for use as a duster*

Now I'm done. :-D
