Symbolism of Tsuiokuhen

Rurouni Kenshin OVA

Everything in anime seems to be a symbol for something else. I guess that's how things work in Japan.

Blood and fire symbolize life but also impurity; snow and water symbolize death, but also purity.

Kenshin of course is blood and fire, whereas Tomoe is snow, water and ice. The impurity of Kenshin/blood seeks purity and redemption in Tomoe's purity/ice/water. Fascinating stuff.

Even the food the Japanese eat is symbolic! Different dishes are served at different times of the year to symbolize the seasons. Spring-type foods would have a lot of green in them, etc.

Clothes too are worn in color according to the seasons.

At least that's how it used to be. It might not be anymore with Japan's continuing fetish for all things Western.
