Reflections of a year past.
You know, this time last year, I was just finishing up my first school year as a bus driver. I was going to take a couple of weeks off, look for another job for the summer, and try to move on with my life. On June 24th, I went to a White Sox game vs the Astros, the Sox won in extra innings and it was also Poker Night at Dad's house. June 24th was one of the more fun days Ive had in a while.
Then it was Sunday, June 25th. I woke up at about 9:30, went into the front room and played on my PS2 for about an hour. I knew that Mom was going to visit Grandma Lois today, so I decided to wake her up. Mom usually fell asleep on the chair, so I didnt think anything of it when she was slumped over when I went to wake her up.
"Mom?", "You're going to Grandma's today right?"
No answer.
I push on her shoulder
Nothing
"MOM!"
Nothing
I touch her shoulder again.
Nothing.
"MOM!!!", as I touched her forearm. It...was...cold...
"MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!"
911
"I think my mom is dead, send someone out here now!"
"Dad, you and Eric need to get down here NOW!", I was in tears.
"Why?" Dad asked
"Moms dead"
Im bawling, the paramedics show up, pronounce my mother dead, and call the coroner. The police take all of her meds, the pot she had hidden in the house, everything. Im calling friends, family, doctors, lawyers, everyone I can think of. I cried for almost a week. Mom was cremated, buried next to her dad, my grandpa, whom we lost in 2003.
Its been almost a year, a week shy in fact. It seems like an eternity, and it also feels like it just happened this morning.
If you read this, I thank you, its been hard writing this, but I feel like it needed to be done.
Take care everyone, and dont take the relationships you have for granted, they might end tomorrow.
Again, take care
John Schultz
