DOUBLE FIREPLACE-by Jerry Clowel
Do you know what a double fireplace is? It is when you have a fireplace in front of you, and directly behind you is another fireplace that is connected to the same chimeny.
I lived in a house with a double fire place one time, and I was as scared of the dark as any kid that had ever lived.
Now my brother Sonny, used to make me sit in front of the fireplace intill I got so tired that I would either fall out on the floor, or I would have to feel my way around to get to the bedroom.
Now this particular night that I want to tell you about, Sonny had sweated me untill I went out to the fireplace. And when I finally had gotten up to go to the bedroom, I saw that mama had moved the bed.
Here the bed was over by the door, and over where the bed used to be, was the dresser.
Now every night, after I had gotten the bed nice and warm, Sonny would came running, and jump into my back on the bed.
And I was layin there thinkin, "Do you recken Sonny knows that mama has moved this bed"
Then I heard him running. Aboogidy boogidy, here he comes.
And I felt the air from him. I saw his feet leave the floor, and for several moments, it was like he was just in the air.
Voom,voom,voom. Sonny landed and his head hit the wall under the dresser.
Mama came running, with a lamp held over her head,"What in the world has happened to you youngings?"
And I was laying in the bed laughing.
Oh good lord! Sonny was squaling. And we sat him up and picked splinters out of him and dobbed macercorn on him till daylight. It took that long to get enough macercorn on him from where all them splinters had stuck in him.
