It was 11 o'clock at night, at the Brief's mansion. Everyone was asleep. Not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse. Ategev was sleeping peacefully in his bed, when he heard a high-pitched shriek.
"ATEEGEVV!" his mother yelled.
"What the..."
Ategev leaped out of bed in his boxers. He ran for the door, seeing a yellowish-orange light coming from outside. He entered the hallway, and saw his mother's room's in flames.
"Mom! Mom!" Ategev cried running towards the fire.
He dived through the fire, just barely getting burnt. He could feel the intense heat of the flames.
He looked through the frail wood still standing, that which used to support the bedroom doorway, and saw a hand with shards of glass stuck in it, being melted away.
"MOM!" Ategev yelled.
A dark looming shadow rose up above Ategev.
"Mom...?" Ategev said, peering upwards to see what was making the shadow. He could barely make out a faint silhouette of someone. He was either, very buff, or very fat, and had red glowing eyes. Whatever it was, summoned up a small red ki ball, in it's left hand. This illuminated the beast a little, but it's appearance wasn't what made Ategev's eyes widen immeadietly.
The beast swung the energy ball at the house. Ategev dove to the right, hearing a almost deafining: BABOOM!
"Oh God... Aah..."
Ategev ran out of the house, exiting out of the living room doors.
"AH AH AH... OOF!"
Ategev tripped on a stone step. He looked at his foot and saw a very large, and red scrape there. It looked about ready to bleed. Ategev stood up, shakily, trying not to put to much pressure on his bum foot.
"Please... Somebody! SOMEBODY HELP!" Ategev screamed, watching the beast fly away.
"Yes, we... We heard a noise in the back. And to be honest, we both thought it was Ryu. Because Ryu uses the back entrance most of the time. But Ryu called out to him, and he didn't answer."
Videl pictured her and Ryu sitting at the table playing poker, looking at the hallway entrance, at the sudden sound.
"And right then, I don't know why, but right then I knew something was wrong. I knew that someone was in our house. I could... I could just tell from the kind of silence."
"Both of you were in the living room?" a man asked.
"Yes. And I think Gohan knew something was wrong too, because he got up first. He got up and he called out to Ryu again. There was nothing for a second, then we heard a pan drop. Gohan looked at me and said he thought a squirell got in the house. And I said I never heard of that happening in the outskirts of West City. Then I looked in the doorway of the kitchen, and there he was."
Videl pictured a man, with jeans and a jacket on, his face concealed by the shadows. She remembered, Gohan getting in front of her, and holding his hands out.
"He... He was standing there in the doorway... He was shaking, and he asked us where we kept our money. Ryu told him we don't have any. And we didn't. Nothing."
Tears welled up in Videl's eyes.
"And the guy just got real agitated and screamed: "GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY!' And Gohan... He... He just... He..." Videl couldn't get the words out quite right. He eyes began to grow wide.
"I guess it was just the tension of the situation, the ridiculousness, I don't know, the way things have been going lately. But, Gohan he.... He kind of chuckled and said: You probably have more money than we do.'"
Videl could just picture Gohan smiling at the man, almost laughing. Tears, began streaming down her eyes.
"And the... the chuckle kind of, I don't know, it really made him mad," Videl finished.
"What happened next, ma'am?" the man asked again.
"And that was it. He just ran out the way he came and... Oh, no." Videl said, seeing Ryu come through the door.
There were two policemen in the lobby of the house. One was standing next to the pictures on the wall, past the doorway to the living room. Another was standing at the doorway, exiting and entering, every now and then, to let people through. One of the people from the ambulance had a black bag with Gohan's body in it, on a roller. He had sleeked back gray hair, and 4 peircings on his right ear. He had a stethoscope hanging around his neck, and a walkie-talkie attached to his belt.
In the living room, on the couch, sat Brieanna's mother, Aneerah Jordan, Videl, and Ryu, whose head was slumped over. Ryu had grabbed Videl's hand and was holding on to it tightly. Videl had blood spattered on her nice, pink, button down shirt. There was a forensic investigator collecting evidence, and circling things on the floor, like bullet caps, and Gohan's outline. There was a pool of blood, right in the chest area of Gohan's body's outline. There was s tall, bald, black man with a mustache. He was jotting notes down, as Videl was telling her story. He wore the basic buisness suit. It was almost the same, but it was all gray, and seemed a bit more formal.
"You two will stay with us tonight," Aneerah said bowing her head.
Videl turned towards Ryu. She widened her eyes, and tears streamed down her face, mor rapidly. Ryu lifted his head, when Videl grabbed the shoulder of his shirt. He was crying too, although not as rapidly as Videl.
"What are we going to do, Ryu? Oh, no!" Videl cried.
"Units respond to a 340 at Chelsea and 9th," a voice said over a radio on one of the policemen's shoulder.
The policeman pressed a button on the radio.
"Copy dispatch," the policeman said.
"Do you guys have any spare cars over there? We have a 340," the man said over the radio.
"We're almost done here. What's up?" the cop asked.
Videl was sobbing on Ryu's shoulder now. Ryu, however was listening to the conversation between the two policemen.
"We got a guy... tried to rob a Popeye's Chicken not two blocks from where you are. Three squad cars were parked out front and the guy still thought he could take the place. They chased him into an abandoned warehouse and are requesting backup," the man said over the radio.
"Man, the idiot brigade is out in full force tonight, yeah, we'll send car 444 over now. Over..." the police man said.
"Over."
The other policeman walked over to the policeman with the radio. Ryu listened intently.
"A foot chase? Maybe the same guy who perpetrated this whammy?" the second police officer asked.
"I wish. Go on over and be cop," the first police officer replied.
Ryu's eyes narrowed. He immeadietly got up, and ran for the doorway.
The man jotting notes got startled and looked up. Videl was confused at first.
"Ryu? Ryu!" Videl called, but Ryu just ignored her.
"Oh, it's okay, ma'am. Kids take these things the hardest..." the man jotting notes said, "The kid's just got to find a way to let it out."
Ryu put his costume on immeadietly, and was already flying over houses.
At the warehouse, there were three police cars with the same number of officers outside. They all had their lights on, but didn't have their sirens on. Two of the officers had flashlights. One carried a automatic rifle, one carried a standard pistol, and one carried a shotgun. The man with a pistol shouted over the loudspeaker.
"We're not going to wait here all night, pal! Be smart and cooperate!"
"Officers at 412, back up is on the way," a man said over the radio.
"That's good news, dispatch. I would like to finish my dinner," the man said back through the radio.
"Call in the update, over," the man through the radio said again.
"Sure, sure. Over," the man with the loudspeaker replied.
Up on the third floor of the warehouse, the man who stole the chicken was watching them, through a broken window.
"Pigs are everywhere..." the theif muttered, pulling his pistol out of his jacket.
"The only way out is through the front door! If we have to charge in there, it ain't going to be pretty," the man with the loudspeaker said again.
"Take you with me if I have to, pieces of garbage. Gonna get outta here one way or another," the man muttered, walking away from the window.
"That's exaclty what I was hoping to hear..." a voice said, ahead of the thief.
The theif looked up, startled at the voice.
Ryu stood in full costume (still without the red armor) in the dooway, menacingly, as if looking down on him. He had his arms crossed, and since the thief was half-crouched, he kind of was looking down on him.
"...murderer!" Ryu growled.
"NYYAAHH!" the thief screamed, letting off two shots of his pistol.
BLAM! BLAM! Ryu leaped to the right, dodging the bullets by at least three feet. Ryu then took a step forward and flicked the gun out of the man's hands. The gun went flying against the wall, and almost went through it. Then Ryu leaped back into the shadows and dissapeared.
"Everyone down!" the policeman with the loudspeaker ordered.
"I... I must be seein' things. I..." the thief said stumbling around the warehouse looking for his gun, "Must be out of my..."
THUMP! A tire hit the thief's back hard.
"OOOFF!" the man cried, falling face forward onto the floor, the tire rolling away.
"Maybe he popped himself?" the policeman with the shotgun asked.
"You wish," the policeman with the rifle answered.
The police man with the pistol and loudspeaker now had a rifle as well.
"What is this? Wh... What's goin' on? I gotta... I gotta hide... I gotta..." the theif's (hereby known as Theif) eyes widened.
Ryu stepped into the light, striding over to the Thief. Theif tried to get up, with much diffuculty.
"Mister, there is nowhere on Earth you will be able to hide from me!" Ryu declared.
"AARRRGG!" Theif yelled, lunging at Ryu.
Ryu simply countered it by slamming his right fist into his face, sending Theif flying. It made a resounding POK!
"Ya can't... Ya can't..." Theif breathed in between gasps.
"Yeah, well you shoulda thought about that before you... That... That face! It's... Oh no, it can't be..." Ryu muttered seeing Theif's face.
It was that man! The man who told Ryu to get out of his way! The man, the deli owner hassled Ryu about stopping! The man who shot Gohan!
"He hasn't come out the back either, Captain Nunes?" one of the officers asked.
The man who was jotting notes down earlier, had made his way to the warehouse. He had a heavy blue jacket on, and his badge hung from his neck.
"Your call," one of the other officers said.
Back in the warehouse, Ryu took out Theif's driver's license, and was looking it over.
"Should we call S.W.A.T.?" the last officer asked.
Thief flew out the windo, with a rope tied to his waist. Shattered glass fell to the ground. Everyone was startled. Thief hung from the rope through the window. Two of the police officer's smiled gleefully, poking him with shotguns. Captain Nunes just stared at Theif wondering how this happened to him. Captain Nunes looked around. Then, startled he spotted something.
It was Ryu flying away, looking back at his handiwork. By the time one of the cops reported to Captain Nunes, he was already out of sight though.
"The place is empty. We found the gun, but..." the policeman said leaving Captain Nunes to fill in the blanks.
"What happened in there?" Captain Nunes asked Thief.
"Seein' things... Seein' things..." Thief mumbled.
"What? What did you see?" Captain Nunes asked.
When Theif didn't answer he lifted up his head. His eyes were blank, as he were hypnotizied.
"You told me... You told me..." Ryu mumbled.
He was standing on the corner of a building, holding his helmet in his hand. He had his eyes closed and bowed his head. He remembered Gohan telling him his father's beliefs. His mind wandered back to the deli owner, wishing he hadn't been so rude. Then his mind wandered back to when Gohan was shot. He wasn't there but he could picture it so perfectly.
"Great things are going to happen to you in your life, Ryu. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility. Do you understand?"
Ryu looked at his helmet. He stared at the black seethrough visor, and narrowed his eyes.
"I do now."
(Iwas selfish. So selfish, and you paid the price. You did, I did, Grandma Videl did. I will never ever forgive myself for that. I will never ever forget that i could have stopped it.) All night Ryu preformed good deeds. He did everything from saving children,
(It's all so clear now, Grandpa Gohan. It's like I've been wearing a blindfold and earmuffs all my life, and someone just ripped them off me. I see the world clearly now, and I see what my place is in it.) to saving women from gangs, to beating up bank robbers.
(And with great power then must come great responsibility. I will never let you down again, Grandpa Gohan.)
Later that night, (it was probably, technically morning by now) Ryu returned home uncostumed. He walked sadly across the street to his house. Ryu noticed someone sitting on his doorstep. The person appeared to be female, but he couldn't really tell until she stood up, and walked into the streetlight with Ryu.
"How you doing?" Brieanna asked.
She wasn't wearing the same clothing from the party. She wore a pink button down shirt, light brown khakis and black flip-flops.
"I... Uh... I don't know," Ryu answered, unsure of himself.
"Your Grandma is staying with us," Brieanna said.
"Good," Ryu replied.
"They asked me to wait here for you. Bring you back to our place if, you know, if you want. I was so worried," Brieanna explained.
Ryu put his hand over his face, and let tears roll down his eyes rapidly. He crumpled to the ground and started sobbing. Brieanna got down on her knees and hugged him tightly.
They held onto each other for what seemed like forever.
