The exterior of Rowan’s home looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in ages. The weeds on the lawn were waist-high, except for the cement sidewalk leading to the front door, and the siding on the house was old and faded. A few of the windows were cracked, but most of them were in fairly good condition.
Rowan led Sato up to the front door, jerking the handle, but realized it was locked. Rowan sighed, then said, “Wait right here…”
Rowan jumped over a weed-covered fence, going around the house to a loose window. He opened the window and slid into the house. The inside of the house did look much better than the outside. The interior of the house was, for the most part, clean. The carpet was vacuumed, the floors were clear, and the walls were painted their solid colors, not a chip or crack in sight. He ran through the house to the front door, unlocking it and struggling with it a bit, kicking it open. He gave Sato a smile when she walked in, and he said sarcastically, “We have the best security system in town… Crappy-looking house, old rusty windows, doors that won’t open…”
Sato giggled, shoving past him and going straight to where she knew was his room. He rolled his eyes and followed her, not surprised to see her turning on a Resident Evil game in his room. His room had moderately dark navy-blue wall paint, although one wall was covered with hard-rock posters, and on the other side of the room was a fairly large desk, which held dozens of notebooks piled on the surface. He went and sat on his bed, looking to the nineteen-inch television screen as Sato tentatively played Resident Evil. After listening to the intense and quickening clicks of the video game controller, Rowan asked, “…Are you just pressing random buttons?”
Sato smiled, staring at the screen and replying, “That’s what makes the game so FUN!”
Rowan chuckled, rolling his eyes. He leaned back on his bed, soon putting on his headphones and turning on some music, closing his eyes. Sato looked over her shoulder, looking to Rowan and saying, “Hey, Rowan- … Rowan? ROWAN!”
Sato sighed, pausing her game and standing up. She walked over, able to hear his music from across the room. She reached over, unnoticed, and stretched one side of his headphones. She said in his ear, “You don’t have to listen to that through headphones, put it on speakers.”
With that, she let go of the headphones and giggled as they snapped against Rowan’s ear. Rowan rolled his eyes, tugging the headphone cord out of his stereo, the music soon playing rather loudly through the room. Sato smiled, picking up one of his notebooks and tossing it onto his lap. “Go ahead, write something.”
Rowan looked down at the notebook, then smirked and shot back, “I will if you go back to your game.”
“Deal, only if I get to read it once you’re done.” Before Rowan could say anything, Sato jumped in front of the television and went back to her game. Rowan sighed, tapping the pencil on the tip of his nose and starting to write in his notebook.
---
Sato pumped her fist in the air, cheering and shouting, “YESH! I am officially halfway through the game!!!”
Rowan smiled, answering, “Throw a party… I wonder if I can find a greeting card that says, ‘Congratulations on getting halfway through Resident Evil’…”
Sato gave him a playful smirk, answering, “Shut up… Besides, I’m not done yet.
“Well, I almost am… Although I should probably hide it before you even look at it…”
Sato jumped up, walking over and sitting next to Rowan on the bed. She tore the notebook from his hands, reading Rowan’s newest piece of work.
Sunny breezes of the summer winds come further,
Sweep through the soul and leave self-control,
Leave me here to ponder the world.
I hope you forget me never,
Because if you will, my spirit will kill,
And I’ll
Sato smiled, handing the notebook back to him. She said, “Introducing, the winner of the Best Writer award, Rowan Reed!”
Rowan shoved her playfully, smirking and saying, “Knock it off, this isn’t very good… Only coming up with it in five minutes, just a few cheap rhymes.”
Sato’s smile widened, and she replied, “No, I like it. It sounds… weird, in a good way. Cool little weird rhyme.”
“Just the fact that you use the word ‘weird’ to describe my writings scares me out of writing anything else for the rest of the day.”
“…Really?”
“No, I wasn’t gonna write any more today anyway.”
Sato shrugged, answering, “Fine with me, but I’m gonna keep stealing your video game privileges.”
“Fine with me,” Rowan shrugged, turning back to his music and switching CDs. He said jokingly, in fake anger, “Fine. I’ll mind my business if you will.”
“Fine,” Sato shot back, smirking and keeping her eyes glued on the television, still pressing random buttons. She paused the game for a second, turning and asking Rowan, “Where’s the rest of it?”
“What?”
“The rest of your little poem-thing. You cut it off on the last line.”
Rowan shrugged, replying simply with, “I told you I wasn’t done…”
“Well, are you gonna finish it?”
“Naw, I had a brainfart right on the last part…” Rowan shrugged again, standing up and dropping his notebook onto the “junk desk” along with the other piles of old notebooks.
Sato stood up, shutting the video game off and looking to Rowan, stretching. She said, “I think I gotta get home, or, um… I’ll miss…”
Rowan smiled, finishing her sentence, “Your parents would kill you.”
“Exactly. So… See ya tomorrow…”
Rowan nodded, not bothering to get up. Sato had been over at his house enough times. She knew her way out.
Sato went out of his room, down the hall, and out the front door, calling back, “BYE!”
Rowan chuckled. "She’s gonna be pissed when she realizes she didn’t save her Resident Evil game…"
