Vampire of Mine CH. 5
I was standing in the kitchen, fixing a late dinner. It was amazing how quickly I had adjusted to living with vampires. No we weren't having blood. I was making steak thank you...well done if you were wondering. Streak was sitting next to me, the stirring spoon in his mouth. He liked the gravy a lot. He was my official taste-tester.
"Like that don't you boy?" I asked with a smile, as I wiped my hands on the towel by the sink. I got a soft bark in response. I laughed. Streak accepted me so quickly. I mean it used to just be him and Jesse, and then I came along. Jesse said he liked me from the very beginning. Shocking, because I learned later that Streak doesn't like many people at all.
I heard the door slam and a set of keys get dropped on the dining room table along with an unfamiliar click of something else.
"Jesse?" I asked as normally as possible, my nervousness somehow seeping into the words.
"Yes?" the word was whispered into my ear, as two arms like chains wrapped around my waist from behind. I gasped at the shock of cold lips on the tender flesh of my neck.
"Jesse." I said assuredly.
"You got it." Jesse chuckled. He then stepped over to the stove and began searching through the various pots and pans.
"What are you doing?" I asked with my hands on my hips. "Why can't you just wait until dinner like everyone else?"
"Because I'm not everyone else." He stated in a tone insinuating that it should be obvious.
"You are such a smart ass." I tried to sound stern, but I couldn't help but giggle as he got his finger burnt in the boiling gravy.
At that point there was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it." Jesse said.
"I'll get dinner on the table." I smiled and returned to the stove. I heard voices in the other room. It sounded like Elliot and Rachel. Good, the only one missing was Danielle and everyone would be here. It had only been a month and already Elliot and I were on good terms. He admitted that he was slightly intoxicated and that his actions that night at the bar had been unforgivable. He was really a nice guy once you got down to it. He had been very helpful to Jesse and I.
"Hello Elliot, Rachel." I said nodding to each of them in turn.
"Hello, Faith." Rachel said, "15 and already working like a 40 year old house wife. You poor thing. Jesse, this is unacceptable." She scolded waging a perfectly manicured finger in Jesse's direction.
"I didn't make her do anything, miss priss." He snarled.
"Not now, Jesse!" I yelled, getting quite annoyed with his attitude. That was his brother's mate after all.
"She's right, Jess. Not at dinner." Elliot said, hands in his pockets. "Lets eat."
"Thank you Elliot, but we have to wait fo-"
"HI EVERYONE!!!"
"...Danielle..." we all said in unison.
"Did I miss anything?" Danielle asked, looking from face to face.
"No, darling. We were just waiting for you." Rachel said. Danielle was Elliot and Jesse's cousin. They were very close, more like siblings than cousins.
"NOW, let's eat." Elliot said and everyone sat down.
"The food was quite good." Elliot complimented during my trip back from the kitchen with dishes.
"Thank you, Elliot." I said smiling. "Though Streak deserves some credit, he is my taste tester." Streak yipped in agreement.
"That reminds me." Jesse said snapping his fingers. We all stared at him thoughtfully. " I brought you something today." He said, looking at me.
"That click." I said remembering the unfamiliar sound when he'd come home.
"Huh?" He asked, confused.
"Nothing." I said waving it off.
"Ok." He said. "Well. I saw how helpful Streak is to me, especially when hunting. I got him when I was changed. Since I changed you, well half way anyway..."
"YOU WHAT?!" Elliot bellowed.
"Oh yeah...that's why I didn't tell you..." Jesse said.
"I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU!!!" Elliot was furious.
"He had good reason." I said, I knew I was stepping out of line.
"WHAT REASON COULD HE POSSIBLY HAVE TO DO THAT!?!?!?!"
"I wanted her to be safe." Jesse stated.
"SAFE?! FROM WHAT?!"
"From you..." Jesse said softly.
"You did it that night didn't you?" Elliot said, understanding creeping into his face.
"Yes." Jesse said.
"I understand now." Elliot said, taking a deep breath. "We would have changed her eventually anyway. So how painful was it, dear?" He asked me.
I remembered the pain, but also the pleasure. I remembered the way Jesse spoke to me, and how it had felt to have him that close.
"Not unbearable." I said with a shrug.
"OK.... NOW can we get back to my surprise?" When everyone nodded he continued. "I saw how much of a help Streak was to me, and thought that these two needed you anyway, and could be a big help later on when they get older." He said pulling out a basket from under the table.
