---------------------------------------------

Shinichi was being awfully quiet.

Ran reflected on this as they walked side by side down the sidewalk, returning from school.

He hadn't talked about class, or soccer, or even babbled about his detective mysteries.

He hadn't said anything. He just walked, looking straight ahead.

The silence unnerved Ran, but everytime she tried to speak, she would feel so uneasy breaking the silence that her mouth simply closed and no sound issued forth. It was awkward.

They arrived at the intersection they needed to cross to continue on their way home. They stood, waiting for the light to change.

It was now that Shinichi spoke.

"Ran....I'm not going to be seeing you for a while."

The sudden sound gave her a start. She turned at looked at him, but he continued staring straight ahead.

"Shinichi..." She whispered, feelig uneasy. "Are your parents taking you somewhere? To America for another vacation?" She tried to put a smile on her face. It didn't quite work.

The light turned red.

"No....I'm not leaving. But I won't be seeing you...not even in a while. I won't see you ever again."

With those words, he stepped out and began crossing the street.

She stood, shocked, for a few seconds, before she ran out after him, and grabbed his hand. They halted in the middle of the street.

"What do you mean, Shinichi? Why won't you be able to see me if you'll still be here? I'm not that easy to get rid of! If you're not leaving, why do you say such things??" She felt strangely panicked for some reason. He wouldn't meet her eyes.

"Because..." His voice was softer than air, a bare whisper she had to strain to hear.

He looked up and stared away from her delibrately.

"Because the one that's leaving isn't me, it's you."

She dropped his hand in shock. He ran ahead, across the street.

Her body wouldn't move, her shock was too great. He arrived at the other side and turned around, looking directly at her.

There were tears in his eyes.

"Goodbye Ran." He whispered it, but somehow she heard.

She heard it over the screech of failed brakes, over the shouts of passerby, over the wild honking of a horn. In fact she barely heard all those things.

She couldn't feel anything. Not when he turned away and continued walking. Not when she was sure her heart had just shattered. Not even when the semi, it's brakes failed and useless, struck her squarely and killed her.

She managed a last brief thought.

He knew...

Then all was white.

------------------------------------------

Shinichi sat on the ground, head hung and leaning heavily against the dirty brick wall behind him. He had stopped in some alley, somewhere, just to sit and not feel.

He stared blankly at his hands. He had known, of course. For about a week.

There were quite a few nasty things about being a God of Death.

One being knowing when those close to you are going to die.

He couldn't have stopped it. She was destined to die today. No matter what he had done, death would have found her. At least this way it had been instant and painless.

A scrape of a shoe brought his attention out of his memories. He knew who it was, the only person it could be.

He raised his head.

Kuroba Kaitou, the God of Chaos to his Death, gave him a faint smile.

A smile for Kaitou's own benefit. Shinichi knew who else had died today.

"She's gone, isn't she?" He whispers, and the blank smile Kuroba gives is all he needs to see to have his answer.

So Aoko was gone as well. Then there was no more putting it off.

He gathered his legs under him, blank numbness rather than unsteady wobbling. It ws amazing how much he didn't feel.

Kaitou's eyes closed, and the other god's permenant aura of mischief and chaos dimmed. He almost seemed like a normal teenager. He wished they were.

"Guess it's time, huh?" The thief whispered.

Shinichi nodded. "Time to go."

His hand sought the other's, seemingly with a mind of it's own. Shinichi really didn't mind. He could feel the other god's warmth through the small contact. It felt nice. It felt even nicer to feel *something*.

They walked away.

AN: *Definately* needs fleshing out, maybe even a change in writing style. But needed to get it out of head, badly.
