I looked at the Good Counsel website just out of curiosity, and browsed over their course information. At the bottom of the page it said that GC doesn't base any placements on race, color, ethnic background, etc. etc. (not in so many words, but I don't remember the exact notice). I know it might not be the most amazing and moving thing anyone's ever read, especially in a Catholic school that seems to accept just about anybody, hence they are moving to a larger location, but it was soothing, in a way. Somehow it's very reassuring to know that there are places where they really actually don't base a thing on physical or religious/ethnical differences. There are situations in which people give advantages to those of minorities or whatnot, but really, that's not any better than discriminating against them. We are ALL EQUAL in the value of our being. Discriminating against one race to make up for once doing the same to another isn't going to get us anywhere, and might someday turn into an endless loop. Also, the colleges and places that do this are often just striving for a better self-image, having equal amounts of all different backgrounds, but education isn't related to race. If a person who is black or another non-caucasian background and just isn't cut out to go to that college, and another person who is white is, it would make sense for the more well-equipped and productive person to be admitted and the other not, right? Apparently, some people don't think that way. Turning the tides in the totally opposite direction is not helping.
*sigh* I'm sad my Japanese classes are over. I made some good friends in just two weeks. Hopefully we'll meet up at Otakon (or beforehand, as may be necessary) in July. I'm thinking of maybe cosplaying as Hanasaki from Fruits Basket. I've got the hair (only it's too damn light, grr), and I love her clothes. Unfortunately, it looks as though Hana will have glasses for a day. Oh well. Still, as my first time cosplaying (hell, my first time at a con--eep!), I'm quite excited. There'll be so much there, I can't wait to soak up the experience, even the overpriced Pocky and large men in sailor fukus. I love trying new things, right? So this should be great! (Plus Fred Gallagher should be there--my first autograph ever! EEE!)
