Bible-Thumping
I was perusing the lovely Flying Spaghetti Monster site, and for some masochistic reason decided to read the hate-comments. As usual, I'm appalled at how people act towards one another. There were all kinds of "rebuttals", from religious individuals bashing Pastafarianism for bashing them (love the logic there) to people who obviously had nothing better to do with their rage at life than cuss out a group of people working for a cause and having fun with it.
The latter I cannot explain. I've been angry at individuals before, and expressed it without much restraint, but when it comes to groups of people I try very hard to be fair-minded, or at least put them down using actual arguments instead of "ur on fuckign SHRUMS MAN". I can't figure out what drives people to be so incredibly rude and stupid-sounding towards strangers who are known to broadcast such statements for the amusement of others. My only possible explanation is that they're drunk or high on some other substance. I don't want to think that their upbringing or even personality brought about such behavior. That's too depressing.
But as for the "religious" individuals who get so up in arms that they act exactly as Jesus would NOT have them act... I'm fairly sure I know why, though the answer doesn't make me very happy. These people are insecure in some aspect of their lives (I do not mean this as an insult; insecurity is natural and often not the fault of the insecure person, as I should know), and therefore rely on religion as a crutch, because it is supposedly infallible and therefore anything they claim to do in the name of religion can't be wrong. There are probably unpleasant people who lean on religion simply because they want an excuse to do whatever they want, but I hope they are in the minority. In any case, these people frighten me to some extent. They're the kind you cannot argue with. And since my only weapon is logic, illogical people or those who deny logic make me very nervous. I'm not sure how they go through life, since my entire thought process is based on logic.
Anyway, I think I will convert to Pastafarianism, if not FSMism. FSMism is as logical as any other theistic religion--the gods of religion old and new come in strange and often inexplicable forms, and age is certainly not to be a determining factor in a religion's validity, since we must remember that Christianity, one of the most popular religions in the world (I say popular meaning widely practiced), was at one time a new and frightening concept. Even Jesus was a Jew before establishing Christianity. So either that, or Unitarian. My cousin said something the other day about Unitarianism that I liked. "The Unitarians will marry a piece of bread to a bottle of mayo--if they really love each other." When I asked how one could be sure they loved each other she said everyone loves mayo--which I don't, but I digress.
Anyway, if anyone has any other religions to suggest, suggest away and I'll look into them. Personally I'm looking for something that has caused a minimum of violence and doesn't claim that the leaders of it are infallible. Because we're human, dammit.
