CHAPTER 1

Gazing into the translucent glass, with a small ray of light reflecting off of its glazed surface. Her eyes filled with terror; her expression perplexed. She awaits the image creaking toward her. Only to be seen as a shadow through the now shaking glass. It slowly advances, as she stands, unable to move her feet from the suddenly blurry floor. All she can do is wait for the terrifying creature. Nothing, but horrified emotion staining every cell in her stone like body.
Her breathing grew shorter and shorter with every crackling step of the dark creature. She was screaming to herself in her head,
“MOVE YOU IDIOT! JUST RUN! HURRY! NOW!”, but her legs planted themselves to the cold stone floor as if planted like a tree. “Why cant I move?” she thought. Suddenly she felt a breath of icy air pass her trembling neck. A freezing, dry, almost scaly hand slowly grasped her paper white arm. The color drained from her already ghost-like body. She tried to scream, but all that came out was a dry, scratchy little whisper in the back of her throat. Helplessness took over her. The glass still tightly grasped in her solid white knuckles. “it’s a dream. It has to be!” her mind shuttered. An icy feeling now filed her every nerve. The creature dragged her slowly into the ebony shadows. As the darkness engulfed them, the only thing visible was the blood like eyes of the terrifying beast.
A slow chilling breath exited the lungs of the mysterious shadow. Suddenly a huge blast of fire came shooting strait at the girls terror-stricken face. As the flames blew toward her she cringed in fear of getting burnt. Once the flames reached her she screamed out. Although there was really no need. The flames that now danced around her were not hot, in fact they felt like jumping in a lake on a 0degree day. She looked up, in fear that was only a distraction for what was really going to happen. She looked around her. Not a thing, but the glistening flames were in sight. Now she was confused. She thought for sure the monster was going to kill her. She began to relax, but she soon realized this was a mistake. A scaly tail slipped around her frozen feet. A heavy growl of air entered her ear. Attempting to pull herself together she turned around to be face to face with the coal like face of a viscous dark dragon.
The dragon began a deep breath to freeze her once more when an arrow hit it’s back. It thrust its head around to see who had done this when another arrow came from the side.
“Kiri! ”a voice called from the direction of the first arrow.
“Kokutan?” Kiri shouted, “what are you doing here?”
Kokutan, who was shooting another arrow, suddenly appeared in front of Kiri, “I came to save you of course!” she then chuckled to herself as she distracted the dragon from Kiri. “WOW! This dragon doesn’t know anything dose it Kiri?” Kokutan laughed.
“Stop joking around Kokutan! You know these dragons are dangerous.”
“Ya! If they can catch up with ya!” Kokutan caught a glance a Kiri’s face. “Oh…fine! If you have to be like that.” Kokutan grabbed an arrow and enchanted it to curve to the side then strike.
The dragon didn’t see it coming and was slammed into the cave wall. Kokutan then jumped down from the ceiling to get Kiri. “Ya know Kiri? I thought you knew how to escape those spell it put on you.”
“I usually do, but it caught me by surprise.” Kiri said in a slightly annoyed voice. “I forgot you could fight like that Kokutan. For a kid your pretty good.” blushing a little Kokutan replied,
“Well…thanks, but you’re the one who taught me how to fight remember?”
“Ya, I guess…but I’ve never seen you hit that hard before.”
“Me either. Lets get out of here before it wakes up. “
“I guess that would be a good idea.” So with that, they began walking home. As they walked down the trail made of pebbles and sand, Kokutan grew curious
“Hey Kiri?”
“Ya?”
“Have you ever wondered why only us wolfs can be in wolf and human form?”
“Actually , no Kokutan I haven’t.” Kiri was surprised. Kokutan had never asked such a strange question before.
“Well, were here!” Kokutan jumped. She then went into her wolf form and leapt into the den in witch they both lived.
“Ohhh…welcome back Kokutan! Did you find Kiri?” Koori asked. Koori was the wife of Toumoku, the leader of the pack.
“Yup!” Kokutan said proudly then nodded in the direction of the entrance to the cave that now had the shadow of a wolf blocking the sunlight.
“Awww Kiri. We were getting worried about you.” Koori sighed.
“Well I’m fine. Kokutan here saved me from a dark dragon.” Kiri said cheerfully.
“What!? You know not to go around those viscous things!” Koori became worried, “You know…you two shouldn’t go adventuring as much as you do. You’ll get yourselves killed!” Kokutan interupter,
“ We know, but its so much fun!” Koori chuckled,
“I guess ill never understand you pups.”

Kiri suddenly lifted her nose to the air. The sent of spice started to fill the air. “Toumoku is coming.” She got up and went to the entrance of the cave to greet him. Koori soon followed. As they waited, a faint out line of three wolfs could be sighted through the light glistening snow that was now falling. The outline soon became a clear view of Toumoku and his two pups, Mizu and Hinote. All of them were carrying rabbits in which they found for their dinner. Mizu and Hinote hopped into the cave, dropped their rabbits in a pile, and began wrestling with Kokutan. Toumoku came in shortly afterward with four more rabbits to add to the pile,
“Our hunt went well tonight.” he chuckled as the three pups play. “has Rein and Haburi come back yet?”
“Not yet. They wonted to make sure we have a good feast tonight. “ Koori answered, “They said they would be back a little later then usual.”
“Well that’s fine. It will be nice to have a good meal on the night of the first snowfall.”
