Solo On: Toys!
Seeing as I got some rather interesting comments on the last post, I thought this'd be an appropriate subject ^_~
I still collect toys, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I'm not a typical collector though, as as soon as I have them I rip them out of the packages and play with them ^___^. I can't stand seeing them locked inside when there's so much playing potential to be had. And really, if it's a decent toy that you really like, you can do anything with it.
Well, almost anything. Unless you're weird.
My sister and I have a joint collection of... it must be between 100-200 toys. There's no specific ranges that we look for- it's just anything we like that look of. Mostly it's Transformers- Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Robots in Disguise, Armada, Energon, Superlink, Beast Wars Neo. There's also Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Spawn, Aliens, MacFarlane, Power Rangers (dinosaurs and vehicles), Masters of the Universe, Star Wars, and I have a large G.I. Joe helicopter ^_^
Yesterday we had a sort out, putting toys we didn't play with into bin liners to be put into the attic in lieu of selling them on eBay or giving them to charity shops. There are some quite rare things in there, although some are pretty well-played with. Anyone remember Space Precinct? I had the big police car ^_^. And Defenders of the Earth? There's the blue spaceship floating around somewhere, with Flash Gordon and Lothar nearby.
I let myself buy toys fairly often. I don't see it as being greedy, because I only buy what I really like and I gain huge amounts of enjoyment from them. Admittedly, once I buy more I start getting rid of the ones I like least, but at least I don't buy myself out of my bedroom.
A lot of people think it's sad. But I ignore them, hehe ^_~. It's not like I buy them toys or bring them round my house and expect them to play too. Nor do I even play with them when they're here, actually. It's quite a personal thing in truth. Whenever you develop a character for a toy, it becomes more and more special to you, which is part of what i was trying to express in the Nazreal extract I wrote a while back.
My sister and I are actually off to Toys R Us fairly soon, for a look at some ranges that are due to be taken off the sheves soon. I'd hate to miss out on something good, heh.
One thing I do object to is the hideous overpricing of collector's items. Why pay $80-plus dollars for something that has slightly different packaging to the rest of the figures? I don't keep the packaging anyway, so it means bugger all to me. And it annoys me when they create a model exclusively for a certain distributor/event, because it means a really decent toy can cost upwards of $300. And I would never pay that much for a single figure that probably cost less than $5 to make anyway. Even if I really wanted it, the most I ever pay (now, heh- I have made some mistakes in the past) is £30. Anything above that is too much.
I'll have to compile a list of all of my favourite toys sometime, and their character names ^_~. You know, for fun. Nobody has to read it, but I don't mind. It saves me forgetting, if nothing else.
Who said growing up meant you had to leave what you liked most behind? |
