Conan The Barbarian is SUCH an awesome movie!
I felt like spending money, but Gladiator still looked a little pricey for me at the moment. So what did I do? I bought old school fantasy movies! I bought "Excalibur" and the "Conan: The Complete Quest" on DVD and it all came back as to how wonderful sword-style violence was back in the olden days. For the most part, it all still looks pretty good, stories are still told well, and music . . . ohhh, the music . . . . . on one hand you've got O Fortuna from Carmina Burana blasting while armoured knights clash. On the other, you have Basil effin' Poledouris wringing out one of the most epic sounding things ever! So to recap:
Excalibur (1981):
Insanely truncated version of the Arthurian legend. Lotsa fun lines and performances. The guy who plays Merlin rocks. If you can handle the sex and violence (hehe), it's some fun movie watching - easily a textbook example of King Arthur on film. And did I mention O Fortuna?
Come on, YOU ALL KNOW THIS SONG . . .
Conan the Barbarian (1982):
"Ahhnuld's" first big movie where he yells a lot and cuts off James Earl Jones' head. But then you get past all the sex and violence (hehe) and realise this is actually a pretty clever movie. A lot of times there's almost zero dialog, so it all gets very operatic (with love to Basil effin' Poledouris, of course). And come on, how can you not love a movie where a guy crucified on a tree bites an attacking vulture to death? Hehe . . . good fun, good fun . . . . .
I mean, LISTEN TO THIS THING!
Some rental ideas for the more adventurous of ya . . . or at least the ones who can get around rated-R stuff (makes me think . . . I saw these some years ago . . . hmm . . . . .)
