Christopher Reeve WAS Superman . . .
I'm pretty late in posting about this, but yeah, Christopher Reeve passed away on Sunday to heart failure. I'm saddened by it for a lot of reasons. One, in that it happened the same day as my mother's birthday which just really sours the mood of things for those in the know . . . and two, I dunno . . . . . I was really looking forward to the day he walked again . . .
I remember back in the mid '90s, I was in elementary school doing something. I forget how it came up, but I remember asking my friends, "so when do you suppose Christopher Reeve will be able to walk again?" Everyone else responded in exactly the same way: "He's never going to walk again!"
I suppose after that I kinda realised just how serious his injury really was; I mean, you don't break your top two vertebrae and damage your spinal cord and get away scot-free. Mr. Reeve knew that, but he accepted the price and spent the rest of his life paying it back, bit by bit. Sure, there are a lot of people who support particular charities and all, but the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation was above and beyond anything seen yet. That guy put a LOT of effort into his work! There is no doubt that his foundation sprung spinal cord research miles ahead of its time, and I'm sure that millions of people all over the world are deeply grateful for the work.
As cheesy as it sounds, he did make us believe a man could fly, and I definitely believed that he was gonna recover . . . did you know in 2000 he regained movement in his index finger? It might have taken years, but he could have done it . . . though he never regained the use of his body, he still returned to work, directing and, to a degree, acting as well. And you've gotta be impressed by someone who can do even that after everything else.
This issue's come up before where people generally dislike the character of Superman because he's too nice, too powerful, or what have you. They may think what they will, for it doesn't concern me: the real character of Superman was one of a man who gladly fought to protect and better the world he was a part of, regardless of the pressure or work, without giving it a second thought. Chris Reeve perhaps understood that more than anyone . . .
