   I'm stealing Panda's post outline . . . I'm shameless like that, yo
So, the official freelance writer of theOtaku recently ranted that she was uncool in every single sense of the word. She's a good liar, I'll admit, but she's still lying. It's your standard-fare "society and its basic whatevers" and whatnot. She makes a fair point and all, that we're told not to care about these things even though we really do and stuff . . . . . but hey, what else can we do, right?

So, in an effort to make Madam Gail feel better (or inadvertantly make her feel worse, to which case I may have to ritually slit my belly in shame), here's a fun list of things I know/do that probably put me on the outside of the mainstream what'sits:

  • Ridiculous database of Star Wars knowledge in my head, Expanded Universe included. I mean like I know the name of the pilot that crashed his fighter into the bridge of the Super Star Destroyer (the Executor) in "Return of the Jedi", the make and model of Han Solo's blaster pistol, and the reasons why the fat pilot inadvertantly blew up in "A New Hope". Scary knowledge.
  • I've probably spent well over a thousand dollars feeding my on/off hobby of tabletop gaming by Games Workshop. First it was Warhammer 40,000, then Fantasy, then Lord of the Rings. You walk into one of thsoe stores . . . you know you're outside the norms, oh yeah . . .
  • Similar thread, I got into "Dungeons and Dragons" gaming for some time during my teen years. I'm talking spending the night at my friend's place playing and stuff. I always wanted to make a good benevolent thief character, but my buddy never held a campaign together long enough for anything to come of it. And yes, I did try DM'ing at one point to moderate success . . . for those of you who don't know what that means, it's probably for the best.
  • At the age of 16, I joined up with Scouts Canada because my best friend at the time's girlfriend was in it, so he figured joining up would let him be with her more. I, being the good friend, joined up with him . . . um, yeah . . . . . so yeah, I have one of those scout scarves in one of my drawers now. For the record, they broke up early the next year.
  • Did you not see the pile of toy lightsabers in my basement?
  • One semi-real word: "backne".
  • 75-80% of the music on my computer is of anime or video game nature. You'd be pretty hard pressed to find actual ENGLISH music on there . . . and that wouldn't be weird if some of it was actually Chinese, but no.
  • Video games, video games, and video games. I spend a lot of money at the arcade at school during the year, even though even there I feel like an outcast (some of those people are just damn good at what they do, yo).
  • I play the piano; this is normal. I started playing more often again because the current music on the music rest says "Cruel Angel's Thesis", "Aeris' Theme", and "Scrapped Princess: Little Wing"; slightly less common.
  • I still don't understand why I don't own the DVD of "Transformers: The Movie"
  • At work, I chose "Jazz" as my Transformers nickname (my supervisor is Rodimus Prime, for the record).
  • Two words: English Major.
  • I, well known in my senior years of high school as one of the top essayists in my class, was caught casually picking up a dictionary at a friend's house and flipping through it.
  • I know that page 197 of "Jurassic Park" is the page where Nedry (the fat guy) gets spit on, disembowled, and eaten by the spitting dinosaur. I just know this just because.
  • No jewelry, no "clubbing" shirts . . . heck, not even hair gel.
  • I habitually cut and bite my fingernails even when there's nothing to cut/bite. All of my fingertips are now quite brutal, with all the nails well beyond the quick.
  • Cars, sports, new music . . . . . yeah, I'm not really on top of that like everyone else around me. Just sayin' . . .
  • Now and then I do the "Axe Gang" dance from "Kung-Fu Hustle" on a whim. Just because.
  • I spend more time speaking with people on MSN Messenger who live in different timezones from me than with the friends that live locally.

Oh yeah, and there's the whole anime thing . . . remember, this is a guy who wrote about filler episodes. I'm not even gonna touch the whole "personal life" stuff, though, that's just overkill for this sort of thing.

My little brother broke the guitar pick in half. He got it, so meh. Funny, though . . . . . this was a sidetrack . . .

So yes, madam. If you're still feeling sorry for the state that you're in, don't think I won't continue to deprecate myself further than I already have just so I can crack a bit of a smile on ya. 'Cause I will, being the true Chaucerian at hear . . . . OH! I read Chaucer in the original'ish Middle English and liked it! AND I liked "A Knight's Tale"!

Yeah, that's right. I am quite shameless, ne?
