FOUR: MESODIAH
Nathan was scared stiff. What happened to Keri and Dimitrius? He thought, they couldn't have gone outside! It's still raining and thundering! It's dangerous out there! What had happened to them? There was only one thing to do he decided. Once this storm lets up, I'm searching for them and no one is going to tell me otherwise!
"I'll tell you otherwise," said a voice behind him.
Nathan whirled around, still holding the stalactite, using it as a weapon.
"Who's there?"
The voice laughed "Me silly! Otherwise otherwise otherwise otherwise otherwise otherwise!"
"Who's me?"
The voice sounded like a child's voice that's ready to do some mischievous trouble making.
"It's me! Me me me me me me me me me me me me me!"
"Yes I know it's you, but what's your name?"
"It's not you! It's Mesodiah!
I'm just a spirit. I am, considered, the leader of the religion Actuse Menrote terykoto aneb. Which is worshipers of the stone."
"Do you know anything about my friends disappearing?"
"No. Do you?"
"Of course not! Why else would I ask you?"
If Mesodiah could have shrugged, he would have. "Trivia?"
''This is pointless! Listen. Did you see two people leave the room? Ones a girl about 4' 6", with brown hair and crystal clear blue eyes, and the other's a boy about 5 ft. has black hair and hazel eyes. Seen them?"
Mesodiah thought for a minute. "I saw someone who looked like the girl. Her name was… Jane! That's right, Jane."
Nathan groaned "This is getting ridiculous. Once this storm is over, I'm going to look for them myself and you go back to the… Section or wherever you came from. You got it? I don't have time for this. I need to find my friends before something bad happens. How did you get here anyway? And if you could, I prefer to see who I'm talking to."
"Oh, sure!" said Mesodiah "Hold on."
A huge burst of light filled the entire room, it even leaked out of all the tiny cracks and crevasses. In a matter of seconds, the light died down and in its place, there was a child, about seven, with wavy blonde hair, and tan skin. He was wearing a set of old robes that look unfitting for the ruler of a religion. Nathan took one look at the child and tried to hold down the laugh that was forming in the middle of his throat. He couldn't help it. This blonde-hair tan-skinned kid is the ruler of a religion? He simply couldn't believe that sort of thing.
"You? You're just a child! You can't be the leader of a religion! I don't see how they would allow it."
The child scowled at him "What was that second question again, Nathan?"
Nathan stopped laughing "How did you know my name? I didn't even tell you."
Mesodiah grinned "I can read minds," he said "Which is how I know that your friends that you are looking for are named Keri and Dimitrius, right? So anyway, I can travel through different Sections. In the blink of an eye I could be in Cantaro, in two blinks, I could be in Mextancar and so on. However, humans prefer to take a Central portal, which teleports them to different places around the universe."
"So let's get to the main reason I asked that question, why are you here?"
Mesodiah thought for a moment. "I don't know. One minute I'm talking to a king in a conference and the next thing I know I'm here listening to you think about what you were going to do. Don't you humans ever just do what you think is best without actually thinking about it? It must be such a bore being human. Can you guys even fly?"
"No, we can't fly. And I'd highly appreciate it if you stopped telling me how boring my species is. Besides, aren't you human too?"
"What part of magic ruler of a religion are you not getting here? I may look human to you but I am actually a powerful sorcerer who, I might add, are not human."
They stopped the conversation for a while. The rain still poured like nails on wood and the thunder was merely the hammer pounding them into the ground. The wind sounded like a wolf as it howled around the room. Finally, Nathan broke the almost silence.
"Could you take me to different Sections? I've been stuck here for as long as I can remember, and I really don't like staying on this village all my life."
"Well sure I can take you to different Sections. But I can only teleport you once, it's some weird rule that I have to follow. Okay?"
"I understand. Besides, who knows? Maybe I could find my friends somewhere. But what's the rule for anyway?
"Hey, if I knew why the rule was posted I probably would have said why so you wouldn't ask. Because I don't like answering questions."
"So where are we going to go?" asked Nathan with anticipation.
"Whoa! Hold on! I can't go anywhere without an invite from the people that live there. Don't ask me why, it's just another rule that I can't answer. So don't ask me." Said Mesodiah.
They sat for a while and waited for the storm to subside.
*
After a while, the storm died out. So Nathan and Mesodiah had a chance to go searching the village just in case Keri and Dimitrius were still on it. They searched the village from top to bottom. Not that it was easy. The storm had practically destroyed everything. They had to look under, around, and in everything. Under spaces that are under logs, in rooms, even up some trees. But they didn't find anything, or anyone.
"Did you get an invitation to a Section yet?" Nathan asked Mesodiah, "Dimitrius and Keri are obviously not in the village."
Mesodiah shook his head. "Not yet. I'll tell you when I get one."
They sat in silence on a tree stump, thinking that maybe Mesodiah was stuck on the village, when all of a sudden, Nathan had an idea. "Wait a minute, how long did you know about this rule?" he asked.
Mesodiah shrugged. "I don't know. A month maybe?"
"And how long have you had these powers?"
"All my life. Seven years. Why?"
"Who told you about the invitation rule?"
"Some guy… oh what was it? Oh yeah! His name was Parro. He's a con artist. Whatever that is."
Nathan groaned, "Um… Mesodiah? A con artist is someone who lies for a living. You've been tricked! Besides, you got here without an invitation, and nothing happened."
Mesodiah thought this over for a minute. "Yeah! You're right! But I can only teleport you once. That's been the rule since the day I was born."
All of a sudden, a voice came out of nowhere, it said: "Leader! We need your help! The sacred Stone has been stolen! Come quickly! We must find it."
Mesodiah jumped up. "Come on Nathan, we've got to go to Igaroth. My people need help!"
Mesodiah grabbed the hood of Nathan's robe. "Off we go!" and the next thing he knew, the were in a vortex going down.
"Uh Mesodiah?" Nathan asked loudly over the rush of air going past him. "is the Sections that we're going to at the bottom of the vortex, meaning we fall into the Sections?"
"Yeah. It's about a ten foot drop. It doesn't hurt."
"But you can fly!"
“Oh… right I forgot that. Um… brace yourself? He… he…"
"I'm falling head first, unless you do something, I'm looking at a broken neck!"
"Fine! I hear by give Nathan the ability to fly for one hour!" he said quickly.
He noticed Nathan looking at him oddly. "That's how I give people powers. Don't know why so don't ask!"
They fell in silence for a few minutes until Mesodiah said: "There's the exit up ahead. Get ready to fly. Just concentrate and you should be able to do it."
Sure enough, there at the end of the vortex, was an opening. Nathan concentrated on flying. He imagined himself floating above trees and soaring over oceans. He shut his eyes and hoped for the best.
"Hey Nate! Open your eyes!" It was Mesodiah.
He did. He was shocked at what had happened. He was floating two feet above the ground. It was the strangest thing. It felt like his feet were on the ground, but it he was actually flying. He "Jumped" and he shot up another three feet. He "Walked" and he moved forward a couple of feet.
"Hey Nate! Stop fooling around and let's go! In case you haven't noticed, you’re in a cathedral."
"What'd you call me?" asked Nathan once his feet were safe on the ground.
Mesodiah shrugged. "Nate. It's short for Nathan. Do you want me to stop calling you that? If you don't want me to…"
"No! That's okay, it's just that no one ever called me anything but Nathan. Not that I know to many people to call me that anyway."
"Well come on! We got to help my people. Come on."
Mesodiah walked through a wall.
"Hey Mesodiah!"
Mesodiah poked his head through the wall. "Yeah?"
"I can't walk through walls like you can."
Mesodiah thought for a minute. "You're right. Hold on."
He walked through the wall again, and in a couple seconds the wall slid away and a secret door was revealed. Nathan walked through and found himself in an empty room with nothing but a burning candle on a wooden desk. Mesodiah walked through the next wall and opened the door for him. He walked inside. The room was a scene of chaos as everyone ran around like chickens without heads.
A man ran up to them "Oh leader! You've come! Who's the kid?"
"Of course I came! And this is my friend, Nate. Short for Nathan," Answered Mesodiah.
"Charmed." Said the man. "My name is Jerome. Now come this way! And hurry."
The man led them to a pedestal carved of wood. On it was a stunning yellow stone.
"You see? The stone is stolen! This is made of glass," said Jerome.
"Okay Nate, you go sit down over there, by that kid over there." Said Mesodiah, pointing to a brown-haired green-eyed boy siting in the far corner by himself.
"But can't I help? I may be a kid, but I can help." argued Nathan.
"Nate…"
"Come on!"
"No! And don't try to ask me again! Now go sit down with that kid!" shouted Mesodiah.
"Fine, fine…" mumbled Nathan as he walked towards the kid.
He walked slowly towards the boy sitting on the ground. He was so mad! How can Mesodiah say that? He's about seven years younger than him and he's the ruler of a religion! And why could he boss him around? He was younger than him! And he thought that Mesodiah was so nice! Now that he's getting some attention, he's acting like he's the only one in the room, and no one else mattered.
"Hey," said Nathan when he got to the kid " my names Nathan. What's your name?"
"Hey, Nathan, my name's Craig."
