Chapter 8: shadows

It was getting dark, my whole body hurt. i had spent the whole rest of the day training with Rockfur in the training hallow, the place where apprentices learn moves that will help in battle. As i padded into camp i wondered if Lemurtail would be creeping out again to meet with Rainstar, a part of me wanted to stay up until moon high and see. but if i did that i would not be up before sunrise, like i had promised rockfur. "mudpaw..." the sound was so soft i almost missed it, i turned my head to look behind me, no one was there. had i imagined it? "over here..." i snapped around in the direction the voice was coming from. i saw a pale shape. in the growing darkness it looked like smoke. "c-clawpaw?" i mewed. it was clawpaw, but the way he was just standing there startled me. "what is it?" i finally asked. he stepped torwd me, i could she his face better now. his eyes were filled with excitement, he looked a little anxious too. "i gotta ask you something!" he blurted out suddenly "it's been on my mind since this morning!" i stared at him blankly "uh, okay, what?" i replied. just then i heard the sound of paw steps, Greenpaw was all a sudden beside me "hi" she mewed. "you guys have as good a day of training as i did?" i didn't want to answer her, i knew that clawpaw wouldn't continue what he was saying now. he seemed to get nervous alot when Greenpaw was around, that's why it surprised me when he replied to her so boldly "yes!" he mewed exictily "it was great!" i then decided that i would just forget about what clawpaw was about to say, there were other things to think about. and he didn't seem to upset! i nodded "yeah! me too!! i learned a bunch of battle moves!" there was an awkward pause, I was about to ask if they wanted to head over to the fresh kill pile, but greenpaw beat me to it it didn't matter though we all got to the pile just as fast. I was very irritated, the moon was high in the sky now and i had not seen lemurtail. i told myself that i should sleep, but i just couldn't. My curiosity grew with each passing moment...there was no way i would get to sleep tonight. just then a i saw a very dark shadow near the camp entrance. it moved slowly, creeping to the center of the clearing. i didn't breath, it was a cat, a cat i did not know. he had a sleek black pelt, but for some reason he looked unhealthy. he began to pick up his pace, i then noticed that he was heading for the nursery. there were new-born kits in there! i saw a menacing, evil look spread across his face, he plunged as quick as lightning into the nursery. that's was all i could take "NO!!!" i yowled louder then i ever had before, putting all my strength into my front claws i dove into the black tom cat, i didn't remember ever leaving the apprentices den but there i was trying as hard as i could to pull him away from the nursery and the kits inside it. but then i felt unbearable pain, it started in the back of my neck and traveled down my spine. it took a few heartbeats to realized that the black cat had me caught by the neck, there was no hope in escaping his deadly hold, he could kill me right now. but i won't let him, i promised myself. help me star clan! i pleaded. then i felt his grip loosen, a heartbeat later he completely let go. i jumped up clear in the air, i had to get away!
