Senses Project
Aside from taking the SAT today (God, I hope I did well this time...)I've been working on a project for my Anatomy and physiology Honors class about the special senses.

We all know these; Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch.

I'm in a group of three, and we divided everything up. I got stuck with the sense of smell, all of the disorders associated with the senses, and making a Power Point for our presentation.

Not that I mind. I like the disorders, and I'm pretty good at making Power Points for a 17 year old.

I'm one of those wierd people who studies up on all of the wierd illnesses a person can come down with, just for the fun of it. I also like studying genetic anomalies, like Xeroderma Pigmentosa and Albinism.

Because of this, I really get irked when someone pulls a cliche when making RP characters--Albinism in humans doesn't mean that they have red eyes and snow white skin and hair.

Actually, they have a pinkish complexion, cream colored hair, and really REALLY pale blue eyes, accompanied by a massive case of photophobia and a high risk of sunburn.

So, one of the disorders I chose to do was Sensory Integration Disorder, a disorder that is less well known than Synesthesia.

While Synesthesia merely mixes up the senses, such as smelling sounds and tasting sights, SID impaires the individual so profoundly that they can't function in every day life without specialized therapies and coping skills.

The world is too loud and too bright, and even the lightest touch can be painful. Some even have to lay on the ground because they can't feel the pull of gravity on them, or some even crave sensory stimuli that they apparently don't recieve.

Like this one Autistic girl my mom works with. She's such a sweet heart, but her tactile sense is hypocative, causing her to occassionally lay on Mom's keyboard or climb all over me so that I'll tickle her.

It also affects the sense of hearing, and my mom seems to think that I have a very mild case of something like this.

We have a macaw at home, and when she starts screaming it's torture on me. I can't think. The school fire alarm; I immediately jump, drop everything, and hold my head. I don't think about it, it just happens.

I also have issues computing what a person is saying sometimes, to the point where I'll ask for multiple repitions before I actually understand. My dad doesn't like it, because he doens't like repeating himself. He once even went as far as to say that I do it for the hell of it.

What little he understands.

My mom is a Music Therapist, but there is only so much that she can do to help her children. But, I think I can live with my auditory issues. Beacuse that's all they are--bothersome little issues.
