Chapter Three- The Hybrid and the Hater

I blink as I return from my flashback. I gasped as the memory of what happened next, and who the girl and the boy were, finally became clear and overtook me...

A biting wind chilled every pedestrian to the bone. I sat next to the corner of a building in an alley.

My midnight black hair was tangled and ratted, while the red streak remained a perfect curl.

I got a lot of dirty looks that day.

"Damned half-breeds," some whispered.

"Dirty scum," mumbled others.

"Worthless shit!" laughed a group of friends as they passed.

I just stared straight ahead with teary eyes. But there's always that one who can get under your skin.

I'd never really seen her before, but she looked so kind. She walked up to me, a girl of about eight or nine. She bent over, hands on her knees, to get down to my level.

"Hey little girl," she said with a sweet smile and a teasing voice. "Where's your mommy? Where's your daddy? Don't you have any friends? Or did they all abandon you becuase you're just a half-breed piece of shit? Just a hybrid, not even worth a flying fuck. Good-for-nothing!"

I sat there, mildly stunned. "Dead. They're all dead. They're all dead and it's all my fault," I said with tears streaming down my face.

"Awww..." she began, about to make another cruel comment.

I stood. "And you will be, too, if you even dare say another word to me."

"Ohhhhh! Is that a threat, little girl? I'm so scared," she teased.

I said nothing, and just glared up at her. I tried to focus, to harness some kind of power. 'Why won't this work for me?!' I thought.

Another girl, about the same size as the one standing before me walked up behind her.

"Hey, what's going on here," the newcomer asked. She looked at her friend and asked her, "What are you doing to her?"

I took a step back as I thought, 'Oh no... There's two of them!'

"Oh, I'm just telling this little hybrid what she is. A FREAK!" the other girl said and started to laugh as she nudged the newcomer with the pretty blue highlights and tips.

I stared at the ground as the first girl laughed and a tear rolled down my cheek.

"Naga," the second girl said softly. "Hybrids are not FREAKS!!" she screamed. She kicked Naga swiftly in the gut, right into the street. "My bother is a hybrid, you jerk!"

I couldn't do anything but stare in shock.

"You... You hit me! You're a freak, too!" Naga shouted while backing up. She turned around and ran.

"Yeah, you better run," the girl called after her and turned to me. She looked down at me sweetly and smiled.

I looked up at her. "T-thank you, miss. N-no one's ever protected me like that..."

She knelt down and wiped the tear off my cheek. "No one has the right to make fun of you like that."

I hugged her around the neck quickly. "You've gotta be the nicest lady I ever met."

She smiled and hugged me back. "So, what's your name, kid?"

"Taren, what's yours?" I replied shyly.

"My name's Shinjite Sakura."

I smiled. "You have a real pretty name." I noticed someone a little taller than me peeking out from behind her and blinked. "Whozzat?"

She turned around. "Oh, that's just my little brother, Shinri. He's a little shy. Come on out, Shin."

Shinri walked to his sister's side cautiously and poked her. "Whozzat, Sister?"

"That's Taren. She's a hybrid, too."

"Whoa, cool!" he said with a big smile. "Another one just like me?"

"Not exactly," Shinjite replied, "But, yeah. Go on and say hello."

He grinned and quickly hugged the girl in front of him and stepped back. "Hi, Taren, I'm Shinri! I'm a hybrid, just like you!"

Shinjite giggled. "He's five, and I'm eight."

"Wow," I remarked. "He's five, too? So am I!"

She blinked. "Wow, I guess he is just like you."

My male counterpart and I smiled brightly and I said, "Thanks for saving me, Shinjite-sama."

She stood up, and I noticed a turquoise and black tattoo over her eye. "Where do you live, Taren-chan?"

My eyes widened slightly. "I- uhm... Nowhere, really."

Her expression saddened. "Awww. Poor thing." She patted my head and said,"Wanna come home with us?"

"Really?" I asked. I looked up at her brightly with my emerald eyes.

She nodded and said with a smile, "Really. We have to walk, though. Is that okay?"

I nodded. "Just a second, though, I needa get my stuff." I ran a few feet away and grabbed a blanket, tied together at the corners, filled with my personal belongings that I'd managed to grab before I left, and ran back.

While I was gone, Shinri said to his sister, "Is she really coming with us, sister?"

"Yes, of course! We can't leave the poor thing here, now can we," she said with a smile as she picked him up and put him on her shoulder.

I stood beside them and giggled as I looked up at them, and then I hugged Shinjite tightly.

I let go, and she held out her hand with a smile. I held it tightly after poking Shinri's ankle.

He stuck his tongue out at me playfully. "Little poker," he mumbled.

Shinjite and I giggled. I noticed her beautiful blood red nails, the exact color of Shinri's eyes. "Wow, your fingernails are so pretty! Did your momma do them like that?" I asked and looked up at her curiously.

She stiffened for a moment, then smiles down at me slightly as we walked, "My momma died a while ago... My nails are like this naturally."

I nodded, noticing that her old wounds were still tender. "I know how you feel, Shinjite-sama. My momma and daddy were killed about... three... or four days ago," I said softly and stared at the ground.

She blinked a few times. "Oh, gosh, you poor thing," she exclaimed and picked me up with her other hand.

"Wow, you're strong. I never met anyone who can hold two five year olds," I giggled.

"It's odd, I know," she said with a laugh.

"All girls are weird," Shinri mumbled as he poked the back of his sister's head.

"I heard that, Shinri," Shinjite laughed and I giggled.

"Oh, yeah? Well... Boys have cooties, so nyahh," I exclaimed.

"Shinri doesn't. We have to share a bed," Shinjite commented, but neither of us paid attention.

"Oh, yeah?! Well... Girls... Girls are... GIRLS ARE GIRLS!!! SO NYAH," Shinri said, not willing to accept defeat.

Shinjite laughed as we bickered. I said quickly, "Well, boys are... Boys arrrrre..."

"Stupid," Shinjite suggested, giggling.

"Boys are stupid!!" I said with a triumphant grin.

Shinjite hugged Shinri, and he hugged her back. "Girls are still weird," he mumbled, making me giggle again.

We were almost to their house, the place I would call home for a shorter time than any of us expected...
