Autumn Lives
A/N: hey all. here's a story. sum may get hints or remember something related to this. i got inspired by an epi in an anime and a short story and a couple other things. it was merely inspiration. i admit it now. its a write-off. i just changed it around a bit. and well. enjoy.
~~~~~
Autumn Lives
“She has only one week left to live,” said the elderly doctor to the middle-aged woman.
A young girl of perhaps fifteen, perhaps older for the illness she possessed made her look small fragile, was lying on the small bed in the corner. Her soft hazel eyes seemed distant as they stared out of the window by her bed.
The middle-aged woman, still conversing with the doctor, looked unkempt. Her hair was messily thrown into a bun and dark circles were displayed beneath her eyes. Tears swelled in her eyes at the thought of the young girl dying in a week’s time. She cried at the thought of her daughter dying.
The woman and the doctor left the room, side-stepping a boy, about the same age as the girl. He entered the room quietly, and he quickly sat on a cahir which was placed by the side of the bed.
“Hey, Autie,” said the boy to the girl, “I heard what they said.”
“Really? I didn’t want to hear it so I shut them out. What did they say?” she asked.
“Why do you want to hear it if you shut them out before?” he asked her, confusion clearly written on his face.
The girl averted her distant gaze to the boy. Her childhood friend, and, of course she never told him, her lifelong love. He had ashy blonde hair and a habit to run his fingers through it, causing his hair to often be seen in disarray. He had dark brown eyes in contrast to his hair. His eyes were so dark, they almost seemed black. She always loved his eyes.
“Coming from you, Elly, would be better than from a crusty, old man,” she smiled.
He laughed, “True, true. But what have I told you about calling me ‘Elly’? It’s bad enough Mom gave me a girl’s name!”
“Just the same as you call me ‘Autie’,” She laughed quietly. “It sounds like a boy’s name when you say it like you always do.”
Autumn, or “Autie” as the boy calls her, always teased him of his name. The boy’s real name “Elliot” was often called by her “Elly.”
Elliot opened the window wider. Autumn gazed out of the window once again.
In a low voice, Elliot spoke, “The doctor said you have only a week to live.”
“Is that so,” was her only reply.
Elliot followed her gaze out the window. Across from them was a brick wall, a long ivy vine spread out across the wall, decorated with leaves of fall colors. The winter wind blew, causing the leaves to fly away, swaying and dancing on the gust of wind. The winter had just come and the hints of fall were barely alive, but still thrived.
Elliot ran his fingers through Autumn’s hair, which was yet another habit of his. Her hair was a mixture of blonde, red, and brown, just like the leaves of falls.
The girl sighed, “It is how they say, ‘Old man winter kills the beauty of fall’.”
“But fall arises yet again the next year.”
“You always did poke fun at my name.”
He smiled at this, “You mean at how your hair matches the leaves of the season, how your eyes remind me of the treetops. If the season was a human being, it would be you. You’re name is even Autumn.”
They both fell in laughter.
She sat up and kissed his cheek, causing a faint blush to appear on the boy’s face.
“You always have been a sweetheart.”
Elliot smiled sheepishly.
They became quiet, silently watching the leaves fall one by one.
Elliot glanced at Autmn, finding her asleep. He smiled, kissed her on the forehead, and left the room.
That whole week, Elliot made a daily visit. They talked all day long, making each other laugh and smile. Although, on the last day, melancholy and sorrow filled the room. Despite the reassurance that she was fine that Autumn gave Elliot, he could not help but see past the sad smile.
An awkward silence filled the air, wails and sobs were heard from the mother’s room next door, and the swirling gusts heard from outside the window.
Autumn sat up, resting her head on her arms, leaning on the window sill. All the while, staring at the leaves.
Elliot sat beside her on the edge of her bed, thinking silently to himself.
“Hey, Autie.”
“Yeah?”
He reached over and pulled her away from the window. He closed the window and pulled the curtains shut around it.
“Promise me you won’t open the window till I get back. All right?”
She nodded her response.
He left the room, leaving her quietly wondering what he was doing.
A half hour passed till he returned. He sat next to her, a grin on his face that could rival even that of the Cheshire Cat’s. The thought of that made her smile.
“What on earth have you been doing, Elly?”
He didn’t answer, ut he reached up and opened the window. What she saw, caused tears to swell in her eyes.
“Elly?”
“What did I tell you?”
“Thank you.”
He kissed her on the forehead and held her small body in his arms. They sat like that for a long while. She held a hand up to his face and kissed him lightly on the cheek. She looked at him one last time and smiled as she took her last breath. He laid her down on the bed and kissed her on the forehead. He looked out the window, tears now falling generously. He cried as he turned away and left the room.
Outside the window, on the brick wall adorned with the ivy vines, a beautifully and freshly painted leaf. It was beautiful with green, red, orange, and yellow. Above the leaf, in beautiful letters and writing, was the phrase,
"Autumn Lives."
The End. ^^ I hoped you liked it.
here's the sonnet i got for bonus
two households both alike in dignity
in fair verona where we lay our scene
from ancient grudge break to new mutiny
where civil blood makes civil hands unclean
from forth the fatal loins of these two foes
a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life
whose misadventured piteous overthrows
doth with their death bury their parents strife
the fearful passage of their death-marked love
and the continuance of their parent's rage
which but their children's end nought could remove
is now the two hours trafic of our stage
the which if you with patient ears attend
what here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend
it was cool. well i'm gonna go
