Launch
Yesterday, I attended a launch for a community information drug guide. The day was officially known as "Vietnamese Guide to SUBUTEX launch"...or something along those lines...It was an interesting day for certain. Not what I would usually be doing but it was entertaining in some ways nevertheless.

Well, as soon as we got to the function centre, we were shown a seat at a random table. It was quite crowded when my mother and I got there. I sat down and preoccupied myself with the table setting as my mother bustled off and became a cross between a hyper schoolgirl and a social butterfly. It's rare to see her so jovial so it was good for her to have a day like yesterday. We ended up changing tables since my mother wished to sit near one of her close friends.

The emcee had the job of compering for both the English-speaking community and the Vietnamese community. I found nothing wrong with his conversation in Vietnamese, however the English version wasn't spectacular by any sense. I suppose I really paid attention when one of the doctors who worked on compiling the original guide. He was an entertaining speaker and rather effusive in his praise of the main coordinator of the event and the guide. Our illustrious host, Khoa (whom my mum knows, but I haven't the foggiest clue of who he is).

After Doctor. A's amusing little speech, I began to zone out. I didn't intend as a slight to the next speaker who just so happened to be the host for the launch. I fiddled around with my napkin/serviette. I've noticed that everytime I go to a formal restaurant for either a wedding or for any other reason, I have the utmost tendency to start using origami and make a crane or a box or some flower to stick in my glass. It's an unconscious thing I suppose, since I got into the habit when I was 9 years old.

This concluded the speeches, so the traditional entertainment and the food started. The first course was a papaya and prawn salad, which had too much sauce in it. It was practically drowning in the stuff. The entertainment was provided by the Vietnamese Association of Women or the Elderly or something like that. They started out with a few nice songs about spring which were lighthearted.

The next 2 dishes were nothing to write home about. Some sort of seafood soup and BBQ chicken. The next performance was a bit of a surprise. It was one of my favourite Vietnamese operatic singers, Thanh Hang. Now I know that it's a bit strange that I like traditional Vietnamese opera, don't worry a lot of people think it's weird too, but it was great to hear since her voice is wonderful! ^__^

After she sang a few ballads, she then graced us with one of the songs that she had recently sung in a Vietnamese opera. A bit long by modern standards but quite pleasant ot listen to wen you're trying to eat.
The fried rice dish came out next and it was a pretty poor effort as well. I mean, I may not be a gourmet cook but I do know how to make a nummy fried rice. It's sooo easy!

I left during after the rice dish, to rush over to the newsagent and the video store that I frequented quite regularly when we used to live in the area. I bought volume 10 of the Beyblade manga and my magazines...then I dropped into the vid store and hired Nightwalker and GTO.

I went back in, snuck in a serving of beef stirfry. Maybe it's just me or the fact that I'm in a generation of it's own, but there is something slightly disturbing about seeing old women dress up in bright pink skirts and doing a sort of communal dance. I can understand why they do it, since 'young' women no longer want to keep up tradition but it's still slightly disturbing.

We left after that. Me not getting any smarter, just getting a load of information, etc, and a really cool pen! I'm so easily satisfied aren't I?

Make your own fairytale!!!

FAIRY TALE

Once upon a time there has a young OTAKU named KAWORU. He was HAPPILY CRASHING in the LONG forest when he met TALL MURAKI, a run-away PSYCHOLOGIST from the CRAZY Queen JULIET.

KAWORU could see that TALL MURAKI was hungry so he reached into his JUG and give him his VIRILE LOLLIES. TALL MURAKI was thankful for KAWORU's LOLLIES, so he told KAWORU a very NERVOUS story about Queen JULIET's daughter MEL. How her mother, the CRAZY Queen JULIET, kept her locked away in a APARTMENT protected by a gigantic OCTOPUS, because MEL was so HYPER.

KAWORU RAN. He vowed to TALL MURAKI the PSYCHOLOGIST that he would save the HYPER MEL. He would PULL the OCTOPUS, and take MEL far away from her eveil mother, the CRAZY Queen JULIET, and TICKLE her.

Then, all of the sudden, there was a LOUD FART and TALL MURAKI the PSYCHOLOGIST began to laugh. With a puff of smoke he turned into the gigantic OCTOPUS from his story. CRAZY Queen JULIET POPPED out from behind a WHIP and struck KAWORU dead. In the far off APARTMENT you could hear a AARGH.

THE END.

   January musings...MANGA!!!
Konnichiwa minna-san!!!

Since I have absolutely nothing better to do with my time I have decided to make a regular newsletter of interesting stuff and my personal musings related to anime and manga. If you don't want to read my random bouts of insanity that may appear from time to time then just ignore this and you will no longer be a part of my weirdness.

The thing that I am probably most excited about would have to be that MADMAN is releasing manga!!! The good part is that they'll be around $14.95 each. However the prices may change if there is a good response.

The first titles they are releasing are Evangelion vol.1 and .Hack//DUSK sometime around March.

SPOILER: This may or may not be true but apparently in the Eva manga Shinji is not as wimpy (he actually acts like a normal teenager, not a depressed insecure paranoid pod person) and Rei actually has a personality!

Those of you who know who Ken Akamatsu is then will know his acclaimed series 'Love Hina'. Well, he's back and is releasing a new one. The new manga is called 'Negima! Magister Negi Magi'. The cover of the first volume is real pretty and the plot sounds interesting. There are HP connotations but Negi looks cooler so far. (I'll let you know more when I've actually read it. ^___^'')

If you want to take a look see then check it out here.

http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/VEM9IjPmANeWJb593u/browse/item/61878/4/622/420

Now onto other stuff, I found this site recently. It's an online newsletter for anime. It's actually quite nice even though there are only 3 issues. It would be heaps greater if the people would be a little more regular with. Go to http://www.atanime.com/

Now as everyone...well those I have been communicating to regularly should know...I have been harping on about the date for Supanova for quite a while. It's on May 1 & 2 for those who don't know and is at Wharf 8 again. I'm thinking of cosplaying this time. Yes, yes, it would look totally insane but I like making costumes. (Die Kaye! you ebbil person who gets me to make costumes and doesn't wear them!) Anyway, back to the topic before I digress any more. I sorta wanna go as Wizard or Ranga from Angelic Layer but am open to suggestions. However if the costume is too complex I'll definitely make it for Animania. (and no Jess, if I come in costume you cannot take pictures) I just realised that I'm sending this to 2 Jessicas. Well that last comment was directed at the one that knows me

With the trend of live-action flicks being made from comics, most of you would know about the plans to release live version movies for Sailor Moon, Akira, DBZ and Evangelion. Here's the supposed cast for the first movie.

http://saiyan-prince.com/DB_Live_Action_Movie.htm

The thing with live action movies is that it might be so awful. I mean I'd rather stick to the anime. I had about the same reaction when I first heard of the SM Live Action with Sarah Michelle Gellar proposed to play Usagi.

I looked at the DBZ casting and thought SCORE. Hugh Jackman and Orlando Bloom are like 2 of my fave actors. Then I looked at who they were to be cast as. *shudders* Don't know how they will pull it off.

*tries to picture it but fails miserably*

All I can say is if the 1st one is a flop then think how bad the other 3 will be!

PS. Looks like I wrote heaps...maybe I should make a mailing list...it would certainly make my life easier. That way if you guys know something that I don't then you could post something of relevance. Would you prefer Yahoo or MSN?

   Wedding Chaos
My family is pretty disfunctional but absolutely hilarious to watch and today was no exception.

Today was Saturday (03.01.2004) started out as a nice cool sunny morning. I had gotten out of bed at 4:30am, to get myself ready. My clothes were ironed then set aside in one of those body...no umm...those clothing bags. I was pretty much wearing the semi traditional dress that I had worn at my Yr 12 formal last month.

My brother woke up then chucked a tantrum and let me tell you, seeing a 15yr old boy chuck a hissy fit is very funny...especially when said boy is your younger brother. He and my mother had gotten into an argument about his clothing. He had a white suit...very similar to Muraki's (although I don't think that I'll be telling him that) and the argument ended with my mother winning.

Now, I don't like to think of weddings in association with bad omens but this wedding took the cake. Anything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.

Well, after my mother and brother had finished their little spat, I had discovered that for some reason, my left ear had decided to take a vacation and stopped working. It was disconcerting experience, thankfully though my balance had remained.

We left the house on time (a miracle if you ask me, we're all notoriously tardy), and reached my grandma's house. This was a traditional wedding so we had to have the groom and his entourage carrying gifts on cushions covered by red silk cloths. The bride's family would be ready to receive it and the family speeches, etc would start afterwards.

This is what SHOULD have happened. It did with my other aunt's and uncles. Unfortunately for my youngest aunt, her wedding was pure chaos.

Once we had arrived, I started playing with my cousins that had come down from Brisbane. They're absolutely adorable and we spent most of our time playing Go Fish and putting my Dark Magician puzzle together. We had the "breakfast" at 9am. It sounds alright for a weekend breakfast, but I doubt the normal breakfast would consist of suckled BBQ pig, stir-fried noodles, spring rolls and Coke.

The groom was supposed to turn up at 10 which was about the time when we started packing up. In a hurry, I was herded off to change into my outfit and my cousins were roped into greeting duty. It was a mess. It was soooo confusing since the bride's side all spoke Vietnamese and the groom's side spoke Chinese with little English. Well, except for the younger generation.

After, the wedding party had gone traipsing off to the groom's house (representation of the groom collecting his bride) I relaxed with my cousins and watched the Digimon movie with them. Davis looks gorgeous in the movie and Willis is a cutie. ^___^

The house was hot and humid since the AC had broken down. Not good since it was around 30-something degrees celsius.

When it was nearing the time of the reception, I was driven by my mother and a family friend. We couldn't find a carspace to park so we ended up at the very top of a parking complex. The lift turned out to be broken so we had to walk down 6 flights of stairs before reaching the back entrance of the restaurant.

Getting inside I became the person behind the gift table where guests come and sign the red banner thingy. I sat next the the groom's younger brother. He was fun to talk to. We mostly made fun of the wedding couple.

The food was alright...but the menu was so much! 10 courses all up and they had pretty big servings.

NOTE TO SELF: Never touch sea cucumber ever again...*shudders* that is something I never want to eat ever.

I was seated at the elderly table with my grandma's social circle. In the past, I've always been scared of them but today wasn't too bad. I actually managed to carry a conversation with them. They were really nice too.
While I was eating I noticed that one of my other aunt's (we'll call her A) was sitting with her son Ken.

I didn't find out until much later that, the bride had been requested to wear a traditional dress for the end of the reception. However she had forgot to bring the appropriate underclothing. My mum, wondering why the bride was taking so long asked and solved the problem by dragging A into the room. A had to surrender her bra. The dress however was a light pastel green and the bride was wearing something blue. A shook her head violently and said "...you've already taken the top half, you're not getting the bottom either..." That would explain why she sat off by herself clutching her son to her chest.

The rest of the evening passed by uneventfully...I napped, napped some more then ran outside lay on the grass and beybladed with my cousins. We also played tag but i'm hopeless at that.

Overall, an entertaining day.

PS. I'm writing this with eardrops in my ear, my head tilted and cotton wool to plug it...hopefully i'll be able to hear with my left ear again!!!
