"All of this plus chapters five through eight will be on the test Teusday", Ms. Greanwyloe said as she finished slaping the chalk dust from her hands, "and I have a few anouncements before class is dismissed".
Theo worked frantically to finish his notes, abandoning his artwork. Anouncements were usually good news in this class and he wanted to hear them all.
"There will not be a lab tomorrow. Everyone will recieve full credit for the day. Semester grades will be posted one week after the final. Now for something very important". She moved to the front of her desk and held a small piece of paper up for the class to see. "I have been asked by Doctor Hokkum to relay this message", she said and then read from the note,"this Saturday, the ninth, the marine biology department of Sukijo University will pay volunteers twenty five dollors for four hours of their time in assisting with the cataloging of a large collection of Porichthys notatus. Work will involve disection and measurement of reproductive tracks and egg counts. All students who wish to volunteer should contact Reese Tharlon at the University Plaza, telephone 555-8342". She stopped reading and spoke in a warm tone to the class, "Anyone who volunteers, and writes a one page report of the experience will be given a bonus of five percent added to the grade of Tuesdays test".
A roller coaster of emotions swept through Theos chest. A chance to make a little cash, and get extra credit was PERFECT, but SATURDAY! He had now semi-sort of promised two people he would go to the game convention. How could his life keep falling into patterns that he was confused by.
"And one final thing befor we go away for our weekend", Ms. Greanwyloe said more dramaticaly, "I want to see the following students after class today, before I leave my office at three; Theovidis Magalini, Mika Woolorly and Joshua Tist".

The morning was not going to be a disaster after all. The bus was on time and traffic was light. With the last class of the week ahead of him Theo was looking foward to a weekend with his friends.
The classroom was noisy. Mrs. Greanwyloe had never been the kind of teacher to run a quiet disciplined environment. Theo copied the biology notes as fast as she wrote them on the board, but hated that he was so easily distracted by the feelings he had for his teacher. He wasn't in love with her, not really. It wasn't even a crush, but he could hardly make it through one class without wanting to sketch her. He had to focus today though. The material was not difficult, but there was so much to memorize. With only three weeks left until the summer break he had to bring up this grade. As she continued to write the list of names of fresh water fish on the chalk board, her hand absentmindedly pushing the strand of her dark hair, that had come down from the pin on the back of her head, behind her ear, Theo watched her profile. The calm light smile that played on her lips as she made a slight comment on each name, and the way her nose was perfectly propotioned to her face. Without even realizing what he had done, Theo missed the last four entries lightly drawing in ink a stylized silhouette of her remarkable face.

Theo liked Richard probably more than he liked any of the others, and even if he wasn't sure about going to the convention (he did make a promise to Carla, his friend in art class that he would attend and help the art department raise money by selling some of his sketches), there was no reason for him to be rude and ignore the question. "Well, I want to attend Rick, but I haven't made any real plans. Who's going to be there?" he said as he canged directions to move around the young boy.
"The Designer of Worn Stone, and the company that produces Fellkin Lords, the miniature game, and I understand there are going to be three seperate Waterspell tournaments."
That sounded like fun, he had to admit it, "Yeah, I mean sure I'll be there", off in the distance Theo could see the city bus coming from the north, "but call me tonight and we'll talk. I have to go."
As theo started moving away Wendy yelled after him, "Theo, call me Okay."
The bus was slowing to make the stop one street north of the bridge. It was crazy, but without any thought Theo jumped onto the wide railing of the bridge and took a running leap from the edge near the beach and cleared the corner with out falling into the lake. He landed on his feet in a dead run not looking back. If he did he would have been a little shocked at the stares from his friends and others he didn't know who all were stuned by his little stunt. After all he cleared thirty feet.

"I have a class at nine. What's going on with you guys? No school today?", Theo asked as he kept walking, hoping to not be stopped.
Richard, who though small could be intimidating because of his gerth, steped directly in Theos path, and with what seemed to be disdain for the conversation asked Theo, "Are you going to Lucca-Con on Saturday?"

Getting away was suprisingly easy. Getting to the bus would be murder. The bridge between the park and the Alowar highway was exactly one hundred fourty four feet long. It was a replica bridge, made of modern materials to resemble an ancient classical foot bridge. In winter the bridge was decorated with great strings of flowers to commemorate the winter funeral of the princess of Tevaria, what this country was called before it became the Commonwealth of United Nations. It was a beautiful bridge, and Theo had to cross it to get to the bus, and to cross the bridge he had to pass the trolls.
Wendy, Jason, Daniel and Richard, the trolls of Gunjormika High school.
They weren't bad kids, they were worse. They were gamers.
"Hey! Theo", Jason yelled. "What are you doing out so early?"

Time Is Money
"No, I do not want you to be sad Mr. Andersen",said Theo. "I am regestered to begin classes next semester at the university in Welko City. After the summer break I am moving there. It is two hours by train, and I wont be able to come home very often."
Theo stood and bowed to the old man, picking up his books he said, "I have to go now, my biology teacher said she had an important announcement this morning and I don't want to miss it."
"Of course you don't", said the old man. "Theo you are a man now. A college man. You don't have to be so formal. You can call me Parker. My friends call me Parker."
"Yes sir, Parker I mean. I will"
"And we will see each other often. I know we will", the old man said with that grin that always made Theo feel he was kidding. Then something different happened. The old man reached into his coat and pulled out a folded paper. "My number and e-mail, I will be out of town until sunday, but I have a feeling when I get back you will want to see me. Send a message, or call AFTER sunday."
When the old man stood up he held his pinky out with his right hand, fist closed and pointed it right at Theos chest, just like Theos father would do when he was giving him instructions. "Now don't lose that number, okay", and again there was the old mans grin.

"Theo",he said and placed his hand on Theos shoulder, "that would make me sad. You don't want to make me sad do you"?
"Crap, crap, crap", Theo told himself. When was he ever going to learn. DON'T talk to the old man. Sure he'll talk. He'll talk your bloody ear off if you let him, but never start a conversation with him! It was fourty minutes until class and Theo knew he had to do something desperate now or it was going to be two hours of,"oh the colonel 'this' and the colonel 'that'". The time to save himself was now.

"I guess you'll want to know I wont be comming to the park this summer", said Theo.
The old man turned his head and shifted on the park bench. Theo knew the old man wasn't as old as he sometimes acted. The mans face was smooth and dark. His beard was peppered, but trimed nicely, and yes his hair was gray, but there were times when Theo had seen him walking along the lake carrying sacks from the market, two sacks one in each hand. He didn't seem week at all.
