“Theo, that in all likelihood was no earthquake.” Ms. Greanwyloe said. “And if it is just what I think it was, we are going to be in a lot of danger, if not immediately than very soon.” She was walking with a very slow pace, turning her head from side to side quickly, as she spoke. Everything about her seemed different now. There was a stiffness to the way she held herself.
He followed her and could not help but feel alert to everything around him. It was suddenly odd to him that the air had been filled with so many sounds only a few minutes ago, and now the quiet was pervasive, with a distant almost ghost-like wail of a siren in the distance and nothing else.
Ms. Greanwyloe stopped near the back of a small pick-up; something in the bed had caught her eye. “Do you know how to fight?” She asked.
“My father made me study Ch’uan Fa when I was 10, and I learned a little of the Bo, but not much. I was on the wrestling team in high school. Why?”
“I don’t think I have time to explain,” she started to say as she pulled a bull-nose garden shovel from the back of the truck. “Take this and be ready to use it. I will have the door help as much as possible but it is really better as a shield than anything else.”
“Wait. Why can’t you tell me what’s going on?” He tried not to sound upset but he was losing his patience.
“It’s not that I don’t want to explain, but I'm not sure I understand it all myself. I have only heard stories, and read a little. If things go alright, I think I know someone who can…” before another word could come out of her mouth she froze, mouth open, eyes wide in terror
