Hmmmmm.....
Well, I guess I should explain my last post!
It is how I felt/feel about my review being rejected for the third time here at theOtaku! Despite my three major edits and all your well wishes, it still was not approved! It is very frustrating to see that something I worked so hard on be in vain! The only thing I can do is to post it here for the only ones who think it is worth something! I am posting the third version that I try to submit here!
Review of Pretear
The genre of girl power or Shoujo animation has many great animes and Pretear lives up to that expectation. Fans of Kaleido Star, Princess Tutu, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, bishounen and many others, will fall hard for Pretear! Created by Junichi Sato and Kaori Naruse, Pretear is a short running anime that only has thirteen episodes, but in no way leaving the viewer feeling disappointed. The viewer is quickly drawn in and never let down. It contains just the right balance of humor, romance, action and drama. Some have related it to Cinderella or Snow White, which is a fair association, but Pretear is much more then that! It goes way beyond those fairy tales into its own fairy tale legend that centralizes around the human heart.
The animation in Pretear almost has this simplistic beauty to it. The art work goes back and forth between under drawn scenes to well thought out detailed scenes of exquisite animation. The colors of the transformation scenes are beautiful and enchanting.
The setting of the story takes place in one of three main locations. First is the enormous mansion of Himeno's wealthy stepmother Natsue Awayuki and its grounds. Second location is actually different places in Japan. Whether on the city streets or the beach, it is often the place for many of the series battles. The third and final location is Leafenya, the beautiful land of the Leafe Knights.
Pretear has a strong character-driven story base with adorable humor and real heart, that not only makes sense, but is captivating and exciting as well. The story’s main character sixteen year old Himeno Awayuki is going through the awkward teenage years. From the simple things, like high school homework and bullies to the not so simple issues, like family and love. As a viewers I couldn’t help, but root for her success. The long list of supporting characters are lovable and endearing. Adding a much needed comic relief or folly to oppose the show more intense scenes. These characters all play an important part in making the plots twist unfold. This one character Mawata, Himeno’s stepsister, has most controversial part, which makes some viewers outraged or appalled.
The seven Leafe Knights: Hayate, Sasame, Kei, Go, Mannan, Hajime and Shin: the world's protectors of Leafe or life energy are searching Japan for the girl who will become their new Pretear, the Princess of Light. The Pretear has the special ability to Pret, or to combine souls, with each of the Leafe Knights to turn into a powerful warrior with enhanced abilities of the Knights she Prets with. Hayate has power over wind, Sasame over sound, Kei over light, Go over fire, Mannan over ice, Hajime over water, and Shin over plants. The transformations scenes do contain brief, but tastefully done nudity. Once the Knights come across Himeno their search seems over.
The Leafe Knights are all different and provide something for every bishie loving girl. Hayate is a tall dark and handsome man with long dark purple hair, that has commitment issues. Sasame is a soft spoken gentle man with an amazing head of silver hair. Kei has to be the most perplexing of the Leafe Knights, because he is very feminine, vain, narcissistic, and self absorbed. Go has spiked brown hair and reminds me of a caring big brother. He is also kind of the baby-sitter to the younger Knights, when he is not teases or rough houses with them. Mannan is the oldest of the three younger Knights. He is a head strong silver haired bishie in training. Hajime is the middle of the three younger Knights. Reserved and quite, he is another bishie in training. Shin is the youngest of the three younger Knights. He is just so cute and adorable.
What is a great story without a great villain and Fenril the Princess of Disaster is just that. Cold and heartless she wants to destroy the world, because of all the pain caused by love. She has a past with the Leafe Knights that goes back way before the birth of Himeno and goes way beyond the simple good verse evil plot. The true evil in this story is internal isolation, heartache, and rejection we all feel. The outlet for this evil is the Princess of Disaster and Sasame who tries to make up for past wrongs. Sasame is hiding his own wounds from the past which surface in a shocking ways. Many have a strong word against Sasame and what he does. But once I got over the initial shock and saw the end of the series, I came to a new conclusion about Sasame's role. His roles is essential and necessary for the plot’s climax to unfold. Many find this really wrong and awful, I but I see a necessary evil that brings out the clarity, so needed for the happy ending everyone desires. I am not condoning any of Sasame’s actions or methods in getting what he desires, but in the end his immoral behavior bring the peace of heart everyone so desperately desired.
The ending is a happy ending befitting the best fairy tales out there, that leaves the viewer with a hope that true love can conquer all. Pretear is a beautiful story of love and loneliness. With great character that are well rounded and are well developed. The inner struggle they all go through connects with all types of viewers. They draw you in and makes you care for them. I would recommend Pretear to anyone looking for a beautiful well written anime, that pulls at the heart strings of the viewer!
Author Notes!
The four volume front covers are very shoujo in nature and are elegantly draw. Featuring Himeno in four different poses in her transformations outfits along with some Sasame, Go, Kei, her stepsisters Mawata and Takako. While the back covers features a brief description of the episodes, episodes titles, special features contained inside that volume and a couple screen caps from the episodes.
ADV is the Entertainment and Media Production company that produced the English dubbed version of Pretear, continues to place a large amount of work on the extras they have at the end of each volume. There are production sketches and clean versions of the opening and closing. Lastly, there is a big extra for English dub fans. David Williams, the English ADR director conducts simple one camera interviews with many of the voices actors spread out over the four volumes. Which I found to be an awesome behind the scenes look at the voice actors behind my favorite characters and which fellow voice actors lover should also get a kick out of and a great laugh from.
