Overview
Kyo grew up in Kyoto where he attended elementary and middle school. At age fifteen, he chose to forego high school and instead began a career in music. When he was eighteen he moved from his home to Osaka, where he entered the music business with his first band Gesshoku. Kyo went through several other bands, often recording only one or two full songs. Eventually, he joined Haijin Kurobarazok, where he met Kisaki and Shinya. After Haijin Kurobarazok disbanded, Kyo, along with Kisaki and Shinya, formed a band under the name La:Sadie's, where he remained until 1997. The other members included Kisaki, Shinya, Kaoru, and Die. In early 1997, La:Sadie's disbanded due to difficulties with Kisaki. Kyo and the rest of the band formed what is now known as Dir en grey (along with new bass player Toshiya).
In late 1997, Dir en grey released MISSA, in which Kyo wrote all of the lyrics and composed one of the songs. Over the years, Dir en grey had extensive touring and released many singles and albums. In 2000, during the TOUR 00>>01 MACABRE, Kyo was hospitalized with Acute Acoustic Trauma and was left partially deaf in his left ear. Touring resumed after he made a full recovery and the band continued releasing albums and touring without further problems.
In 2001, Kyo released his first poem book, jigyaku, rensou furan shinema. The poem book contained many poems and a CD with tracks inspired by the poems. After several more albums, DVDs, and various releases with Dir en grey, he released his second poem book, zenryaku, ogenki desu ka? saihate no chi yori namonaki kimi ni ai wo komete. This also contained a large amount of poetry, as well as a bonus CD.
Kyo is currently on tour with Dir en grey in the United States. Dir en grey is playing on the Family Values Tour, headlined by Korn and the Deftones. In Toronto, during the Family Values Tour, an accident caused Kyo to be taken to the hospital. From first hand accounts from fans, he fell and hit his head, yet he went on to finish the band's set.

Stage Presence
Kyo often self-mutilates on stage. He is known to "fishook", which is done by ripping at the inside of the mouth with one's fingernails until they bleed freely. He also claws his chest until deep, red welts appear, beats his cheek with his fist, and 'stabs' his chest with the microphone. The musician also coughs fake blood on stage, or falls over and rolls around while continuing to sing. Kyo is also known at times to wear a bucket on his head, or toss a bucket into the audience. The bucket sometimes has various obscene phrases written across one side of it. Kyo is very active on stage, and is known by many nicknames in accordance to his height and the emotion he displays in his music.

Lyrics
Kyo's lyrics are sometimes considered sadistic or disgusting. Kyo himself has admitted to writing things that make it hard for people to accept him. His subjects are often unpleasant for most readers. They are often filled with perverse images of violence, rape, and paraphilia. The song mazohyst of decadence is written from the mind of an unborn child being ripped from its mother's womb during an abortion, while the song Berry is about a girl who murders her parents.
Kyo often uses words with double meanings and puns which can make fully understanding his lyrics or poems difficult, even for native speakers of Japanese. His work carries continuing themes which connect his earliest and latest poems together. Some of these include flowers (sakura blossoms), religion (God and Christianity), parents, colors (blue and red), suicide, sex (innuendo and blatant references), and many others. Kyo enjoys making his songs hard to understand, and apparently 'likes to take a story and remove all the bare-bones and main points of it to leave a complex piece'.

Trivia
Kyo has been in bands since he was 16, and some of his previous bands are still well known, such as La:Sadie's. One of these bands was a Kuroyume cover band called DEATHMASK.
Kyo was once a roadie for Kuroyume. He also claims that both Kuroyume and Kiyoharu had a big influence on his music.
There are many rumours about Kyo. Kyo encourages these by giving false answers to interviews, some of which appear too extreme to be true. For example, he says that his favourite foods are fried scorpions and birds.
In July of 2006, Kyo was hospitalized with inflamed tonsils. A few of Dir en grey's shows had to be postponed.
Kyo was offered the role of Yoshitoki Kuninobu in Kinji Fukasaku's 2000 adaptation of Battle Royale, but Kyo's management forebade him to take it.
Kyo often performes to the point of unconsciousness during live performances.
Kyo rarely ever meets fans.
Kyo has also designed items for Japanese clothing brands BA-TSU and ID-JAPAN. He has modeled both onstage and in fashion magazines, sometimes in his own designs.
Kyo is the only member of Dir en grey who isn't nearsighted.
Kyo suffered an injury to the head and was taken to the hospital during a show on the Family Values tour in Toronto 2006. Kyo finished the set despite his injury.
