Well I want to pursue a similar albeit different course as the China traders, so I couldn't resist writing up a little piece about it. It doesn't rhyme well, but I liked it:

The essence of my soul is locked in bygone ages,
What I strive for no longer exists, and I am alone.
Erased and forgotten from time’s cold pages,
Who I am and who I will be in me is as strong as stone.
Those high sailing clippers and storm tossed seas,
Looking for me, they shout from the past,
From Cathay to London, in gale and light breeze,
I seek those far shores, the call of the East.
For power and profit alone are not compelling,
I seek the legacy of those lost in another world,
Those men of old whose life was China trading.
They sailed from London, with house flags unfurled.
A life balanced between virtue and vice,
Always alone bearing trouble and sorrow,
Enemies in every man, among both rats and mice,
The friend and the woman may be gone on the morrow.
Nothing is certain except my ambition’s purpose.
To rule with money what no sword could ever do,
To Lord over Asia and Europe, trading’s true service.
The chit of the compradore paragons spears of bamboo.
No one beside me, no help or support to guide,
From Boston to Yokohama, Antilles to Japan,
My weapons are strength, courage, luck, and lies.
My life’s course is charted: I will be the Tai-Pan.
