Stop The Harp Seal Hunt in Canada and Norway
How can something as cute as this? Turn out to be something like this?
I bet you didn’t know about the Canadian seal “hunt”. Canada’s seal hunt is the biggest mass slaughter of marine mammals world wide. Over 330,000 harp seals have been killed in 2006 already. In the past three years, the Canadian government gave the sentence to more than a million baby harp seals. This so called “hunt” happens in the months of March and April. Is this really a “hunt”? The Canadian killers of these harmless creatures are called sealers. Sealers would be another word for “hunter” in this situation. Seal hunting is known as a “sport” in Canada and Norway. More slaughters occur in Canada though. How can this to these harp seals possibly be a sport? The slaughter of the seals is not all done for food. Most of it is unessential, vanity, and for luxury items.
Most sealers are unaware that sometimes the seal is still alive before they skin it. One survey has shown that around 42% of the baby harp seals are skinned alive. This is a threat to their species. And about 95% of the harp seals killed are babies younger than 4 weeks old. For over 50 years, people have been trying to boycott sealing in Canada and Norway, and yet, it still occurs.
The process of this terrible “sport” is horrid also. Sealers walk up to the seals (who are defenseless and cannot hide or run away) and are either clubbed on the head till or shot with a gun.
The horror of -filled ice rivers and the terrible suffering of the baby pups dying must be stopped. Harp seals are probably one of the most harmless seals on earth. They swim all day and take very good care of each other. And without warning, sealers just walk up and kill them. We cannot let that happen. We must stop the slaughter of the baby and harp seals. Please help us do this
